The 'Ole Gunslinger: Rodgers "fell into a good situation"

Post#1 » by PkrsBcksGphsMqt » Tue Oct 4, 2011 7:49 pm

Here we go again with BrINT's backhanded complements towards Rodgers.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_ ... -situation

It's been long enough since we’ve heard from Brett Favre, right?

I say yes, and my vote counts more than yours.

Favre's appearance on an Atlanta radio station, courtesy sportsradiointerviews.com, contains another meandering Favrian observation that merits further inspection. Here's his response when asked what he thought while watching Aaron Rodgers take the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl last season:

"I’m going to be honest, I was not surprised. The biggest surprise to me would be that he didn't do it sooner.

"It's funny how people can get over time, my last year in Green Bay prior to the first game, I made the remark that this was probably the most talented team that I’ve ever played on. And of course everyone looked up and was like 'this guy's off his rocker.' We were very, very young; take me out of the mix and we were by far the youngest team in the league. But I could see the talent pool across the board was outstanding. Now our season kind of ended up being a reflection of that. We came close, and I think we took a lot of people by surprise, but guys emerged rather quickly. Aaron had a chance…even though the last couple years it’s seemed like he’s almost a rookie, he’s been around awhile.

"And I’d like to think that he watched, he learned, and then when he got a chance to play, he brought in his ability which is obviously very good or they wouldn’t have drafted him in the first round. He's got tremendous talent, he's very bright and he got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right. And so he just kind of fell into a good situation. On top of that, he’s a good player.

"I don’t think there’s any pressure on him now, the talent around him is even better than when I was there. So I’m really kind of surprised it took him so long. In the early part of last year season, it hadn’t quite clicked yet and I didn’t know it would. I just kind of figured when they hit their stride, they’re going to be hard to beat. And that’s what happened."

You know Favre. His answers are so meandering that nothing he says comes off like a sledgehammer over the head. On the whole, this response was pretty neutral on Rodgers. But there were some very Favre-like passive shots in there as well. Is Rodgers a great quarterback, or did he "just kind of [fall] into a good situation?" And does the Packers' overall talent diminish our view of how effective he is? Finally, Favre made clear that Rodgers "got a chance to watch and see successful teams do it right." So Favre taught him how to win?

The Favre-Rodgers transition will always be an uncomfortable topic in Green Bay. In the end, I bet Favre doesn’t like Rodgers questions anymore than Rodgers likes to talk about Favre.

Favre's never met a question that he didn't like.

Well except, "Is that it?"

Wow. Didn't think Favre would say something like that. Thought he'd pretty much just say Rodgers was a hell of a player and the Packers were a hell of a team.

It seems like he kind of sidestepped saying he was a good player.

To be perfectly honest, I somewhat agree with Favre to a point, and it hurts to say that. TT has surrounded him with an asinine amount of talent AND Rodgers got to wait for three years before playing. That's about as perfect a situation as a QB can ask for. Now, does it take away from how ridiculously talented and prepared Rodgers is every week? Nope. The guy studies his ass off and has all the physical talent in the world.

What he said isn't wrong. Rodgers has more talent and he fell into a great situation. The only thing that made me roll my eyes was the remark about not winning the title sooner. Christ, he did it in his third year as a starter, and as the reason they won. He didn't come along for the ride like Big Ben or Brady.

The bolded part I completely agree with. Favre ignored saying anything about Rodgers preparation, his great physical ability, etc. He seemed to kind of push that aside.

I have been defending Favre for a while now because I think the hate towards him has got a bit ridiculous over the last few years. But it seems like he's basically trying to say "Rodgers is winning because of his teammates, they aren't winning because of him.".

Which, obviously all QBs need talent. So there is truth to it... But he seems to be trying to take away from Rodgers' accomplishments by saying he should have won sooner and talking up how great his supporting cast is while ignoring just how good Rodgers is.

Pretty much sums up my exact reaction.

To me, last year we got into the playoffs because of the D. We won in the playoffs because of Rodgers. It was one of the best postseason QB runs ever.

I think it was an overall team effort.

But if I had to vote for a regular season MVP for the Packers it might have been BJ Raji, Tramon Williams or Clay Matthews. When it came to the postseason it was without a doubt Rodgers.

Now this year he is just apparently locked into that playoff mode and is going to consistently dominance like that. Great supporting cast or not, what he is doing is incredible.

I just heard the soundbite on the radio and Favre comes across as a whiny jealous bitch, especially the two times he says he was surprised it took him so long to win a super bowl.

I've been a Favre apologist, but this was just a stupid thing to say. I think he really just doesn't care about his Green Bay legacy anymore. All he had to say was a generic answer and move on but he just couldnt resist. Sucks for me as I was looking forward to the day he would be welcomed back but with more stuff like this, people arent going to even care.

i don't mind this comment at all. In fact, keep them coming. Keep chipping away at Aaron's shoulder.

Brett's a good story in Packer football history but we've all come to know his personality which is not as stellar as his football accomplishments.-
Once a drama queen / attention addict always a drama queen / attention addict

He just sounds resentful and insecure. I don't really care. Eventually his nbr will be retired and he'll be in Pack HOF - rightly so. Then I can finally totally ignore his interviews while remembering his on-the-field heroics.

Rodger's marginal skills would be expossed if not for John Kuhn and Tom Crabtree.
