A-Rod = worst contract in baseball?

Post#1 » by Apathy » Sat Oct 8, 2011 2:39 am

Alex Rodriguez is 36 years old, making $24 million for the next six seasons. After a .402 OBP in '09 he's just been good, not great, with a ~.350 OBP and ~.480 SLG. More worrisome than his lack of production are his injuries: he hasn't topped 138 games played since 2007.

Toss in his poor post-season play and seemingly perpetual distractions and would you even take six years of A-Rod for $15 million? $10 million?

They might be able to swing getting him to restructure to get Pujols to the Bronx, but that's a one in a billion chance. Plus, it would most likely end up in A-Rod having to move from third.

Vernon Wells is number one, Arod is atleast a productive player, Wells is one of the worst regulars in Baseball. Second worst contract comes down to A-Rod vs Ryan Howard's contract that hasn't even kicked in yet. Howard is gonna be making 21 million a year for 6 years while not even being a league average first basemen, unlike A - Rod who'll be a solid above average player for a couple of more years

You're right, Howard and Wells are pretty terrible. Carlos Lee's pretty bad too. Sure is great not having a cap, eh?

Six years is a long time, though. Zito's got what, 3 more seasons?

I'm not sure how A-Rod's D rates in advanced metrics but if it starts dropping...

So far we've got:

Wells
Howard
Zito
A-Rod
Bay
Lackey
Lee
Soriano

Jayson Werth if you're really feeling bold.

Well going by last year, Crawford's is the worst. 6 years 120 mil :o At least Howard and Werth look above average, assuming Werth goes back to his .850 OPS type rate

It's a bad contract if A-Rod continues to decline.....which is more likely than less likely given his age.

The Yankees can afford it though.....

Jake Peavy has to be in this discussion as does Jason Bay. Adam Dunn (who might be) and I have a feeling Yankee fans would not mind a do over on A.J. Burnett. Zambrano is due 18 mil in 2012 and 19 mil in 2013 playing for a team that suspended him for acting like a 5 year old. Whoever said Zito is right though $46 million the next 3 seasons minimum with a 7 million dollar buyout in 2014 really sucks.

You can't argue with A-Rod/Wells/Zito/Peavy/Burnett/Dunn/Zambrano right now all of them are really bad.

I still can't believe that Alex Anthopoulos turned Wells into some expiring deals or near to them. Wells just had to go the guy lost his passion and was overpaid by a bad GM in JP Richardi.

Rodriguez is probably the worst considering the protection he has.

However, Alfonso Soriano's MIGHT be worse because he can't play defense.

Arod is. There are worse bang for your buck guys out there but ARod is assured that contract for 6 years. Imagine the numbers he will put up at 40. If he is not the worst contract right now, he will be very soon.

oh, the advantages of being on the Yankees roster :x

If Albert Pujols was a Yankee like in A-Rod's position, im willing to bet he woulda exceeded the 30 million per he is looking for if he had demaned it, like A-Rod or Jeter did..... and if A-Rod was not a Yankee, he wouldn't have even come near that "long term" deal he got.

You mean like when the Rangers gave ARod that 10 year $252 million contract (and who had to agree to pay a portion of ARods contract for the Yankees to trade Soriano...who has...AFTER the trade ended up signing one of the worst contracts in baseball by the Cubs)?

So if Pujols signs a 10 year $250-260 million contract with the Cards it'll be ok? But if that was with the Yanks I'd imagine it would be a terrible contract right?

I'm pretty sure Zambrano's contract will be over after this upcoming season. The Cubs won't pick up that option in 2013. There might be a small buyout $ amount but he's not due 19 mil in 2013.

Anybody else thinking if Prince Fielder gets in the $175 million range he could be one of the worst contracts in a few years?

Still can't believe Vernon Wells is getting $24.5 million this year thank god for Alex Anthopoulos moving that deal off the books.
