Rhino to play in Drew League (LA)/Goodman League (DC) Game

Post#1 » by mkwest » Thu Jul 21, 2011 11:03 pm

The Goodman League is the long-standing pro-am summer league out of Washington D.C. that has seen a lot of NBA players come through it.

The Drew League is the long-standing pro-am summer league out of Los Angeles that has seen a lot of NBA players come through it.

Both have a streetball feel, both have big time reputations. East Coast vs. West Coast. This year, the two leagues are facing off in a showdown game (August 20 in Washington, D.C., and you can watch it streaming on the Web). Thursdays the rosters were announced — and it is on.

I'll definitely try to watch this, since there hasn't been any summer basketball I could watch.
I've been an LA Clipper fan since 1998 and that will never change. I hate our new logo and jerseys!

I haven't really seen any of the Goodman league, but have seen the Drew League online.

This match-up is not a contest in terms of talent, but fit and the nature of the game can make it a contest. There's been teams without pro talent that has taken down teams with a few NBA guys this summer, so I wouldn't be surprised either way.

Drew League Stream

Drew playoffs have started. Craig Smith (Team COA) and Marcus Banks are up against Nick Young, Javale McGee, Julian Wright and Gabe Pruitt of the Young Grangers. Rhino has 24 points heading into the 4th quarter with a 1 point lead.

Also, Clipper Darrell and John Wall are in the building.

Team COA won the game by double digits. Smith had over 30, but I don't know his full stat line atm.

Cat Mobley is playing in the current game for Go Ham along with DeMar DeRozan.

Early in the third quarter of his team’s 135-134 victory over the Los Angeles-based Drew League, Goodman League commissioner Miles Rawls looked down at the opponent to his right and said, “It’s a long flight to L.A. with an ‘L’ on the chest.”

The words elicited laughter from the crowd but seemed to fire up the players from the left coast as they immediately overcame a double-digit deficit to eventually take the lead as James Harden drove and dunked and Brandon Jennings, scored, flipped on his back and later danced. The visitors silenced the stunned overflow crowd until Wizards point guard John Wall and District native Kevin Durant brought back the Goodman League -- Wall with his quick feet and nifty passes; Durant with his high-flying dunks -- and set up a thrilling finish.

The event proved to be worth it for players who decided to participate in what might be the last basketball game featuring NBA players for a while. That is, unless these teams can get together for a rematch sooner than later. After losing a heartbreaker, the Drew League is already hoping to see the Goodman League again – in Los Angeles. “We can do it,” Harden said. “We made this trip, they can make the trip as well.”

Some of the controversy revolved around the rules. DeMarcus Cousins technically should have fouled out, but supposedly players cannot foul out in the Goodman League. The Drew League's coach managed the game to prevent his bigs from fouling out. This discrepancy should have been cleared up before the game as it could have been the difference in the outcome. Other complaints revolved around officiating, but that is nothing that any of these NBA players have not had to deal with before with home cooking.

I didn't watch the game, but somewhat surprised to see that it came down to the final play. The Goodman league was stacked. It would be great for the two leagues to have a re-match out here.
