Who do you support?

Post#1 » by Tenacious_C » Tue Oct 11, 2011 3:13 am

I know there is a the Labour discussion thread, but I'm interested to see where posters stand on the issue so far. The poll is set up so you can change your vote. I think it would be interesting to see where allegiances lie now, 3 months from now, 6 months, etc.

Lock if you think it's stupid. lol.

Owners. I want a hardcap. I know it's not happening at this point, but they still want a more competitive league, and that should be what every fans wants as well.

Owners. I want a hard cap, vastly lower player salaries, severe punishment for not trying or being dissatisfied with your team, mandatory incentive-based contracts, regular drug/alcohol/performance-enhancer testing, elimination of player options, and other stuff. I just can't think of everything at the moment.

What would you say if your boss walked into your office and said 'how about you take a 20% pay cut and I going to reduce your benefits, oh and if you don't like it don't bother showing up tomorrow'

If I was getting paid millions for warming the chairs of my more productive colleagues (like a lot of mediocre overpaid NBA players), I'd be glad to still have a job.

A 20% pay cut to $35 000 a year is different from a 20% pay cut to $20 million a year. You can't compare the two.

Sure I can. NBA players are elite specialists, they provide a unique skill set. Just like Entertainers and other 'best of the best' jobs.

Out of all the Millions of Basketball players in the world these are the top 400.

What is the average salary of the top 400 movie actors/actresses
What is the average salary of the top 400 lawyers
What is the average salary of the top 400 doctors
What is the average salary of the top 400 accountants

People make a big deal out of the sports salaries because the business revolves around teams ability to manage they salaries and they are common knowledge. They are not out of whack with the world we live in.

The players are greedy, but don’t they have the right to demand more than the owners? They’re the show after all.

The owners are greedy, and they’re looking to take a greater share of profits because they’ve managed their teams poorly in the past by signing players to franchise-crippling contracts.

How can you support either sides?

We’re the fans. We’re the reason why both sides can feed their family’s family’s family. At the end of the day, if neither side gets enough money, the fans will be forced to pony up more money because what’s going to stop them? There’s no other basketball alternative remotely close to the entertainment value of the NBA.

Even the Raptors continue to charge outrageous prices for the one of the worst products in the league. Only last year have they decided to lower prices marginally after finally acknowledging what we have is garbage.

Those are unfair comparisons imo as it doesn't address the simple fact that the NBA wouldn't exist if it wasn't for the owners. They incur all the risks, liabilities, costs and burden of running a successful business. In any normal business, labour represents 30-40% of your costs and as owner you keep all the revenues.

I would be interested to see what player salaries represent compared to their overall costs and then factor in that the players keep 57% of the revenues!

It isn't fair and the owners have the right to say no when the contract is up. Labour negotiations work both ways.

To be honest I don't really care, but having seen a different basketball pro league nearly completely bankrupt and collapse a few years ago because of exorbitant player salaries and heavy outgoings (as well as an uneven playing field simply due to city locations- sounds familiar..) I tend to side with the owners.

I don't really care who makes more money, but I want a more level playing field and if the owners really are incurring those yearly losses then it's a no-brainer really.

owners definitely, both greedy but its in the interest of the Raptors that the owners come out ahead, in my books.

this is the reason we have some ttc booth collectors making over 100k per year, just because they held us hostage previous years doesnt mean we need to pay the ransom every time their union contract comes up a new deal. at some point pay has to represent production.

Comparing to the NFL, the players have it extremely good here. They deserve to be making less money. I'm siding with the owners. But I'm pissed at both of them for not getting a deal done on time.

I side with the most important people.....the paying customers. Whatever deal brings the most parity throughout the league is the one I support. I could care less about the owners or the players. I care about the people who support their lifestyles.

I support the PA but i want a hard cap, too bad its off the table. The hardcap in Hockey is working out pretty well for the players, i believe they make the most BRI % of all the 4 sports. Baseball without a salary cap is the worst deal for the players. If i were the players i would accept a hardcap in exchange for atleast 53% of BRI.

and hockey is headed for another lockout next season, with a hard cap comes a hard floor and many of the teams are forced to spend that amount and they cant afford it.
