The throwback thing was my first thought, but I read elsewhere that they were new. I watched an NBA 2k12 clip for uniforms on youtube and this is listed under retro uniforms. I just can't place them at this time.

Actually, it's kinda cool to have the NBA season opening on Christmas Day. It's like Santa's bringing us all a bonus present (well, unless you're a Timberwolves fan, in which case you're just getting another lump of coal).

Strained holiday metaphors notwithstanding, we have a lot of ground to cover here in Uni Watch's annual NBA season preview. Let's start with what you can expect to see while sipping eggnog Sunday. As has been the case for several years now, all teams playing on Christmas Day will wear a snowflake-patterned version of the NBA logo patch -- except for the Mavericks, who'll mark their championship by wearing an O'Brien Trophy patch and gold lettering.

In addition, expect several players to wear Christmas-themed shoes -- lots of red and green. And then there's Kobe Bryant, whose Christmas shoes appear to be Grinch-inspired.

Another team waiting to show off a new throwback uni: the Clippers. For now it's NOPE, but it's worth noting that video gamers have been circulating this Los Angeles Stars screen shot lately. Draw your own conclusions.

They were an ABA team with no direct relation to the Clippers. They started off as the Anaheim Amigos before moving to LA to become the Stars and eventually moved to Utah.

I'm pretty sure other teams have done it in the past. I remember the Grizzlies wearing Memphis Pros jerseys. I'm pretty sure they were from the ABA, not 100% sure though.

NBA unveils ABA throwback uniforms

The throwback theme this season is the old American Basketball Association, because 2012 marks the 45th anniversary of the ABA's founding. Some teams are wearing old designs from their own storied past; others are wearing uniforms originally worn by now-defunct ABA franchises in their geographic region. Here's the full slate of designs, all of which will be worn for selected games beginning on Jan. 21 (you can check out the full schedule here), along with Uni Watch's thoughts on each one:
