Chuck & Reggie: spoke TRUTH & calling out players

"In '98-'99, we were having a meeting in New York and all the players were supposed to be there," Miller said. "Michael Jordan supposedly had just retired. When we all got there, there was Michael Jordan getting ready to face off with some of the owners and the commissioner and he almost got into a shouting argument with the late, great Abe Pollin.

"Michael Jordan was going at Commissioner Stern and Pollin talking about if you keep writing these bad checks to these bad players maybe you need to give up ownership of your team. Michael Jordan was, and still is, the greatest basketball player ever and he was stepping up for the players. I have wished all along that Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and others would step up."

I have wished all along that Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and others would step up. Yeah, they came on two weeks ago, but from day one, if they would have been standing up saying, "No, we are not going to tolerate this," there would have been more strength in numbers and they should have been supporting Fisher all along for the 3-4 months as opposed to coming in as a home run hitter two weeks later. There's always strength in numbers, and the high-profile players needed to stand up like Michael Jordan did in '98-'99. Because of what he did, that's one of the reasons that everyone said the players came out on top in that lockout situation. I just don't like that today's star players are coming out as the home run hitters just two weeks before the September deadline.

Barkley: "If the players don't agree to 50/50, they will not play at all this year."

Miller: "I think if the players blink, they might get a 50 game season. But I wouldn't be surprised if the whole season is wiped. But, I do believe the players will blink and come to an agreement. I say 50 games."

Chuck was my favorite player growing up and i still like the guy but he couldn't be more WRONG, as usual.
The last thing that concerns Stern is the balance of the league.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

Reggie said Michael Jordan was having a shouting match in 1998 with stern and silver. Can we make a 40+ page thread about it?

Exactly.

Both the players and the owners are at fault.

I am a Nets fan. I remember the LBJ sweepstakes like it was yesterday. I remember when I found out that we signed Travis Outlaw to be our STARTING small forward for the Nets instead of getting a much better SF. At the time I wasn't in the country, which was probably a good thing. I closed my laptop and just kept saying "Why" and then went to do other things. I was so pissed that management and Avery "POINT GAWD" Johnson would give $35 million to such a high caliber scrub and not think twice about it. Stop paying these fools!

The owners are losing money. The fans are losing money. There is no way in the world that players should expect a pay raise. People aren't just losing a few dollars here and there. They're losing their jobs WITHOUT guaranteed contracts!! Maybe we will get out of the recession soon, maybe we won't. But for the vast majority of players out there, they are overpaid. They need to take a pay cut and have a sense of reality slapped back into them.

We all love the game but we all live in the real world. Just like how the American people hated the idea that banks were too big to fail, we also hate the idea that players think they are too great to fail and have their salaries reduced.

Everyone needs to grow up and be men.

Owners, hire competent decision makers and managers.
Players, remember that you play a game that most of us play for free but you get paid to do it. It's a blessing, not a requirement to get paid playing basketball.

TWO YEARS OFF!!!

"Why are all these stars that carry the league, why are they showing up in New York the week training camp is supposed to start trying to show power then? They should have been doing this a month ago. Let's be realistic. I know some things about the NBA. The NBA has been prepared to not play this season for two years. They (the owners) went through the LeBron thing (hype over where LeBron was going to go play) for the whole season, then the same thing with Chris Bosh and then Dwight Howard on going to L.A. Then it stated last year with talk of where Chris Paul would play and you could hear the NBA saying, "We've got to stop this." It's not fair to the fans in New Orleans next year and it won't be fair to fans in Orlando. The owners finally said, "Hey listen, if all these guys want to play in major cities, what can we do to stop it?" And, they are going to stop it one way or the other. I can promise that."

Highest ratings since Jordan. Period. End of story. Whining from the purest but the numbers don't lie. The Heat put asses in front of the TV as did the Lakers dynasty in the 2000s.

Fans cry about parity and balance but it never shows up in the numbers and $$$ in the bank.

Charles Barkley called David Stern the greatest commissioner in all of the sports. You know, the guy who uses the basketball season as nothing more but a negotiation tactic

Reggie usually sounds like a moron to me when he's commentating but he said it perfectly.

Fat chuck and big eared Reggie wouldn't be saying a damn thing if they were still playing so they should just shut the hell up... heck it's not like they're former players.... oh wait they are. Quit b*itching about a union that made you rich.

Seems no different than when Isiah came after Ewing and the rest of the players during the last lockout. Seems like with each incarnation of the CBA there is always someone from a previous time who missed out on the current gravy train talking about how guys should just settle.

Interesting to hear how Jordan went after Stern and stuck up for players in that 98 lockout, but I wonder where he is in this now? He's changed sides, he is now an owner and I wonder if he is just not involved with these talks at all or what. I would like to know where MJ stands in all this now that he is an owner.
