Would You Deal Bautista Straight Up For Any 1 Player?

Post#1 » by UN-Owen » Fri Oct 21, 2011 12:18 am

Just wondering if there's any 1 player you would trade Bautista for?

Based on their age, position, contract situation and talent/performance, here are a few of the players I thought might be worth considering:

Felix Hernandez, Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw, Justin Verlander, Stephen Strasburg
Ryan Braun, Carlos Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Justin Upton
Miguel Cabrera, Joey Votto, Adrian Gonzalez
Evan Longoria, Troy Tulowitki, Robinson Cano
Mike Stanton, Jason Hayward, Andrew McCutchen
Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Jesus Montero

If we didn't have Brett Lawrie and Yunel Escobar, I might consider trading him for Longoria or Tulo. But we do. Other than that, I can't think of anybody in baseball I'd rather have more right now.

Maybe Roy Halladay?

I'd seriously consider Clayton Kershaw, Andrew McCutchen, Justin Upton and Miguel Cabrera.

I'd never trade a hitter like Bautista for a young pitcher like Kershaw. You just never know if they'll have a debilitating arm injury at some point, so you'd be taking on some major injury risk.

Tim Lincecum straight up.

Too bad that deal with Alex Rios fell through a while back. Anyone recall what the holdup was (apart from Rios was ultimately a sack of crap?)

Mike Stanton, Clayton Kershaw, Matt Kemp, Felix Hernandez, Ryan Braun, Bryce Harper. I wouldn't do a straight 1 for 1 swap with either of these guys mentioned but it'll be an oppurtunity for us to get younger for building a team for the future. The most appealing pitcher and hitter have to be Kershaw and Harper. Kershaw simply because of the fact that he's prolly a lock for winning the NL Cy Young and winning the pitching triple crown at the young age of 23 and Harper because of the massive upside he possesses never seen since A-Rod was a prospect.
Want: Trae Young, Michael Porter Jr., DeAndre Ayton, Jaren Jackson Jr, Marvin Bagley III, Mohamad Bamba, Shai Gilgeous- Alexander, Elie Okobo, Jevon Carter

Top prospects have failed to hit major league pitching before and they will again.

Just Tulo for me.

If we didn't have Lawrie, I might consider Longoria too. He was actually ranked 1st in trade value by fangraphs, in large part because of his contract.

But hitters taken 1st overall generally develop into elite major league hitters

Based on the hype, I'm guessing Harper becomes a legit MVP candidate before he hits his prime

I'll say no one because of the contract. Cabrera is 20 mil+ a year, Braun is on a dec price now but has a 20 mil a year contract from 2016-2021 which is still WTF to me. Pitchers are too volatile. Tulo and Longo don't fit in our lineups as well and aren't as valuable anyways. It would probably come down to Bau and Votto and the latter is controlled for less time

A lot of the time they do, but sometimes they don't. Bautista is already an elite major league hitter (and probably the best hitter in the game), you're not going to trade him straight up for a guy that might become one someday.

What's worth more?
Bautista is coming off what looks to be the best single season he will have in his career. Even if he has one of similar statistical value, it will be exactly that, one.

He only has a few super productive years left, and two names off the top of my head I would trade him for are Justin Upton and Longoria. They both have long and productive careers ahead of them.

In a 1 for 1 trade I do not agree with trading for 1 prospect. A package of prospects, definitely.

No to McCutchen. Anyone you trade Jose for has to potentially be the best player in baseball and McCutchen isn't going to peak as that. Maybe if he was a better fielder. I would consider Upton and Cabrera because they are younger and I'll add Longoria and Tulo to that list. No to Kershaw or any other pitcher but Halladay, who I think will pitch into his 40s.
