Calvin vs Joe Thomas vs AP vs Willis vs Revis

Post#1 » by basics » Fri Oct 21, 2011 11:45 am

Each guy is considered to be the best at their respected position, and each guy came out of the 2007 draft. If you were the Raiders and could go back to the 2007 draft, which guy would you draft with the number 1 pick?

My list for the 1st pick consisted of Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, and Adrian Peterson. It was almost a sure thing that the Raiders were going to select JaMarcus Russell. It seemed certain at the time that Adrian Peterson was going to slide out of the top 5.

I wanted my hometown Falcons (who I support) to trade up to select Adrian Peterson or LaRon Landry. I was sitting at a bar with a friend at the time when the Falcons selected Jamaal Anderson. Our food just came, I shattered my glass, and we left after eating. Both of us knew it was going to be a disaster. We expected the pick to be Patrick Willis or Amobi Okoye once it was clear Peterson and Landry was off the board.

I would take Calvin Johnson first overall if I had that pick as the Raiders. They had Nnamdi for a while and let him walk, otherwise I would be tempted to take Revis.

If I could rank em now I would go:

1. Calvin
2. Revis
3. Willis
4. Thomas
5. Peterson

The '07 NFL draft is much like the '03 NBA draft with LeBron, Melo, Wade, Bosh, etc.

Difference being the #1 pick was a bust in the NFL draft, whereas the #2 pick was a bust in the NBA draft.

This was probably one of the better drafts in NFL history.

My ranking would be

1. Calvin
2. AP
3. Revis
4. Thomas
5. Willis

Still hard to believe AP went all the way to 7.

This is probably a unpopular opinion but I'm inclined to take Joe Thomas first.

If we're talking about setting up Oakland for success in the future, then I would've had my board look like this...

1. AD
2. Thomas
3. Megatron
4. Willis
5. Revis

Getting Peterson #1 would have lightened the load on whoever the QB would have been besides JaMarcus Russell. Then, if it set up the right way the Raiders could have traded up for Kevin Kolb, or selected Matt Ryan, or Joe Flacco the next season.

If we're talking out of pure preference, then...

1. Thomas
2. Megatron
3. Willis
4. AD
5. Revis
