I'm not Farrell's biggest backer, and he certainly has his critics all over these boards, but this team is not going to get anywhere changing its manager every year. Were we to allow Farrell to leave, that would mean three managers in three years. So, if the idea is to be entertained at all, the compensation would have to be in offer-we-can't-refuse territory. It would have to be better than the comp the Red Sox get from Chicago for Epstein because the impact on us would be more signiicant in the next few years.

I agree, although if Farrell wants to leave because he is from that area (I believe) then there's not much you can do about it.

I doubt Farrell leaves. I wouldn't mind replacing him with Francona though....

The compensation is going to have to be huge for AA to even consider a deal like this. He specifically hired Farrell because he wanted a manager for the long-haul... it wouldn't make much sense for him to just let his manager walk after one season.

I don't mind, really, if Farrell leaves or not. I don't think he's done anything special to warrant a "he must stay" attitude (not his fault, I think most managers aren't special enough to warrant that kind of feeling from fans). However, if Wakamatsu is next in line for the position, then I'd be very much opposed to Farrell leaving.
Good Lord, the little stoner's got a point.

If he wants to leave and the Jays get some sort of compensation, fine. I don't mind if he stays, but the Jays can definitely do better. He still made far too many easy mistakes for me to have much confidence in him long-term.

Pretend he's worth something and ask for compensation.

yea get francona, and get something out of farrell. if this was brought up during mid-way of the season, no doubt ppl would want this. i doubt much has changed. let's be honest, farrell is not winning games on his managing here, but he did lose games for us.

If Farrell wants to leave he can, but we would likely get nothing for him.

Recently, Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos told Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca that they do not require rival teams to seek permission to interview their employees. That leads Davidi (via Twitter) to believe that they would not seek compensation should John Farrell decide to leave for the Red Sox.

I doubt Rogers will go after Fancona..... he is probably gonna cost in the upper level of managers in terms of salary.

would be great for the Jays though

- u could basically think of it as a trade, where AA fleeces the BoSox.

but in all honesty, if Farrel leaves... i see him being very successful in the Red Sox future

i dunno why. He he's not done anything special in Toronto, but seems like a kinda guy who would thrive with a high salary roster like Boston's. I mean most managers would yeh, but not all. Farrel seems like a guy who can be in Boston for the next decade

He can go to Boston all he wants. That will probably be the last place he ever goes to manage thou. If he bails on the team he is currently employed on, nobody will ever trust him enough to bring him on board their team again. Hope things work out for him. This is probably because Henry (who apparently majorly sucks up to his players even behind his manager and GM's backs) went to Lester and Beckett and asked who they wanted to come in and they said their old pitching coach.

Silence from Jays on Farrell rumours. Judging by what AA told me on policy earlier http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/2011/1 ... di_lacava/ he won't ask for comp if JF leaves

This situation is a bit different to what AA discussed with Davidi in my opinion. If LaCava goes to Baltimore, I can understand us not taking compensation. If Butterfield goes to Baltimore to become a bench coach, again; understandable for us not to take compensation. Ditto if Wakamatsu gets a coaching offer elsewhere as well.

However, to me; you don't let your manager walk after his first year of a three year deal to return to the team you signed him from unless you want him out in the first place. Unless the Jays prefer someone else to manage this team, I'd be very disappointed in the team if he was allowed to leave for nothing. I strongly believe that nothing comes of it, but if Boston wants him so badly they should send us Daniel Bard. Boston either laughs at that proposal or decides that they want him so badly they take the bait. It is not as much as it is losing Farell as the message the young core that our managers office has a revolving door on it. Boston would essentially be getting a guy who got to cut his teeth as a first-year manager which in itself is a pretty good advantage for them.

Yeah...you can't just let your manager walk away to another managing job in the same division without compensation. We're not running a minor league feeder team here, AA, let's act like it.

They should just insist that Papelbon handle the negotiations. That way the deal would take all winter and the spring would come with Farrell still our manager.

Foolproof
