I agree, I find it really hard to believe Ortiz will go anywhere outside of the Toronto/Boston. NL is a write off. In the AL, Detroit has Victor Martinez, Texas has Michael Young, TB has Johnny Damon, LAA will have to play one of their 1B there, Cleveland has Hafner, White Sox have Dunn, and the Yankees will want to keep the spot open for Jeter/Arod/Montero to get sometime there.... and really nobody else is in contention for the Playoffs.

If we can get David Ortiz on a 2 year/16 million deal or something like that then you have to jump at it. He is the best DH in baseball and you know he's going to be killing the Sox and Yankees for the next few years if you sign him.

Coming off of a 4 WAR season (Worth approx 18M), its hard to conclude that he will be paid less than arbitration value (or even the 8M annually you suggested).

If he wasn't going to cost us a pick I'd say throw him a two year 35M deal with a buyout option for 5M.

And who said Fielder is playing 1B for us if he comes? He is the worst fielding 1B in the NL, he will surely be moved to DH.

There's going to be a lot of news about Ortiz because we're the prime candidate outside Boston to get him. With Farrell & Bautista plus the ability to stay in the AL East we look like a natural destination.

It would be a natural fit and it could be that he would make our offense go from top 5 to top 3.

i just hope this wont be frank thomas all over again..

I still hope we can somehow get Votto

SS Escobar
CF Rasmus
RF Bautista
1B Votto
DH Ortiz
3B Lawrie
LF Lind
C Arencibia
2B Johnson

This would be a sick lineup

Except Lind is still here, and in the outfield. That is brutal.

He'll draw in more fans as well, a boost to attendance and tv ratings is always a good thing.. he's more nationally recognizable than most of our players if not all

Toronto sports fans generally don't get starstruck, unless it's a global icon like Kobe Bryant or something. I think Ortiz would have only minimally increased impact on ratings and at the gates.

I know Boston might realistically let him walk.... but if he's that cheap, then why would they?

i mean even if he turns into a complete bust, you dont think Boston has the finances to carry a 2 year about decent level contract. I think if the price is that low, they keep him. If he is crap, they lose nothing cause unlike Toronto, they can afford a big bust now and then..... Would be great in a Jays unirfom at that price though

Where did Bob McCown get that 10 year Fielder rumor? I agree 10 years is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy too much for Fielder who is going to want in the $180-$200 million mark over the life of the contract and that is too much to pay for DH who isn't that great defensively.

Shi Davidi doesn't think the Ortiz rumours are realistic now that we've picked up the option on EE:

By picking up his option, the Blue Jays are pretty much closing the door on other DH options -- the talk of a run at David Ortiz may have been more geared toward needling the Red Sox for putting out feelers to manager John Farrell than reality -- as they focus on other concerns.

"We still have the flexibility if a DH spot comes open or someone becomes available to go down that path, but I will say it's very low on the priority list," said Anthopoulos. "We have a lot of other areas we'd rather address first, but we do have the flexibility to get someone else if we want in that DH spot."
