Belichick advised Dimitroff against Jones trade

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Nov 1, 2011 4:45 pm

1. After Dimitroff called Belichick “as a friend,” the mentor advised him not to make the Julio Jones trade. He felt the Falcons should have stayed at No. 27 and picked Pittsburgh’s Jonathan Baldwin. The deal was too pricey for Belichick’s blood. (Baldwin was our selection in one of my early Mocks drafts. He went to Kansas City on the 26th pick. He caught a couple balls last night in the win over San Diego.). http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-falcons-bl ... nes-trade/

The biggest issue I had with the trade is Atlanta not adding as much depth as possible. It was evident to me that Atlanta still lacked what it takes to be a serious contender and I wanted them to focus more on improving the defense.

That trade was pretty funny. The Falcons reaction to giving up 48 points in the playoffs is to trade like six picks for a wide receiver.

I know from the Cleveland side of things that they had another offer from a team picking in the 11-20 range. I do not know the exact specifics but I know it was pretty steep compensation. So it's not like Dimitroff just fabricated that plethora of picks out of nothing. He won a bidding war. I know the Browns were ecstatic at the ransom they got for Jones--a guy they were not as interested in as most people thought. Mike Holmgren played it masterfully.

Julio Jones is going to be an incredible player if he can stay healthy but the price they payed to get him was ridiculous not to mention he overlaps with what they already have in Roddy White who was the best WR in the NFL last year.

They've been overcompensating trying to pass to set up the run when they've had one of the better running attacks in the NFl over the past few years with a great OL and Michael Turner.

13-3 team who panicked because they got out gunned by the Packers and they're gonna pay the price especially if Ryan's progression flat lines like it has thus far.

I like the signing of Ray Edwards though and I was huge on Corey Peters coming out of Kentucky and he's balling.

when your D gets taken to the cleaners in the POs, you upgrade that, not get another WR

They kept the wrong lineman too. They miss Harvey Dahl, should have kept him instead of Blalock. Plus Sam Baker has regressed to the point where he needs to be replaced. It's not Jones' fault but the price they paid keeps them from addressing these other issues.

I thought Matt Ryan was going to have a breakout year with this addition. So wrong.

I'm not really high on Matt Ryan at all and never have been. I'll defend him by saying his offensive line has been garbage this season and damn near broke his ankle by stepping on it against Detroit.

Dimitroff is trying to win now and Julio Jones was the greatest immediate impact other than AJ Green. I wasn't thrilled about the trade, but I understand it. If Jones can get back on the field it might just work.

I might take Phil Taylor, the guy the Browns ended up getting with the Falcons first, over Jones at this point. When you add in we also got a receiver whos having quite a nice rookie season, a starting full back, and a first and a forth next year its not even close.

Well I'm not going to argue Jones vs. Taylor, but the Falcons weren't trying to pull one over on the Browns. They were paying a ransom basically.

Jones is a beast for sure. Matt Ryan probably has no complaints.

I'm glad the AJC had the article because they rarely put out good material. Both sides made some good points and Jones is a nice addition but now Dimitroff will need to find ways upgrade key areas of the team this off-season.

Nobody is ripping the talent of Jones. It was a bad trade before this game and its still a bad trade after.

Guess that came across wrong. I was just laughing at the coincidence. Not at anyone for making a thread on it, or anything like that.

The Falcons needed an impact player and that's what Jones has been. It's too early to call it a bad trade.

Cleveland got alot of picks, but i don't know how many of those players actually panned out.

Calvin is the best WR in the game, Julio and AJ are fighting for 2nd best.

Atlanta just got a HOF player who just finished his 2nd year and i can't think of any impact player on the Browns right now.

Well I'm not putting Jones into the Hall of Fame just yet, especially since he gets hobbled just about every game, but you definitely don't hear anyone complain about the trade anymore. He can do things that very few players are able to do.
