Re: AK-47 needed or not
We could use an exception to go over the CAP to sign him, but it makes no business sense to exceed the CAP for a team going nowhere net year.

He's too injury prone to pay him that much. 5-6 million per year for 2 years and I would love to have him back. My guess is someone will make him a better offer. I guess we'll see just how much he really wants to stay with Utah.

Yes we need AK, but we should only pay what he could get on the open market. My estimate is $6-$7 million.
If another team is willing to pay $8-$10 million, then I say let him go.

he'd be useful. Experience, versatility, knows the system. No way the jazz will pay more than 7-8 millions, arguably 6-7.

I don't mind paying him 10mila year. Just not longer than 2 years.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

Re: AK-47 needed or not
AK is the biggest impact player on the market available to Jazz at the 3. If the Jazz let him go they'll have a HUGE hole with no money available to fill it.
Caron Butler - can't afford
Grant Hill - wouldn't sign
Shane Battier - can't afford
Jason Richardson - undersized, can't afford
Jamal Crawford - good luck with that one
Wilson Chandler - not taking MLE.
Arron Afflalo - you might get lucky with MLE money, but I highly doubt it.
AK has a bigger impact on the game in many ways than all these players except maybe Grant Hill. Others may excel in specific roles, but AK is the better all around performer. Jazz resign him unless some wild offer flies out of left field.

Re: AK-47 needed or not
I agree with that, AK is the biggest impact player that the Jazz can realistically sign. That being said, there is no reason to screw up our cap space in 2 years for a backup SF today. Just zero reason to do so. It would only help put the Jazz on a mediocrity treadmill.
Now if you can sign him and still keep your cap space I think it's a good idea.

Re: AK-47 needed or not
There's a really good chance the Jazz are in position to pick a scoring wing player in next year's draft (whether it would be Quincy Miller or Austin Rivers) so they need to decide if Burks is the future guy for that role and it would be extremely hard for him to get any minutes with Hayward, Kirilenko, and CJ on the team.

Re: AK-47 needed or not
The Jazz have approximately $57M in contracts (counting CJ's option) for nine players. They have 2 draft choices worth another $5-8M depending on the new CBA. Current projections from ESPN list the 2011 cap at $58M. The Jazz are over the cap with 11 players. I believe they will sign two minimum guys to fill out the roster. Unless somebody with substantial salary is traded or removed it is very unlikely that AK will even be entertained to resign unless he plays for the min.

Okur is playing well enough in Turkey right now for me to be against amnesty in his case. He's going to contribute again imo.
In '03-'04, Jerry Sloan coached the ESPN predicted "worst team of all time" to 42-40.
