Vesely looks awkward out there, but his actual numbers are good to excellent defensively.

He may not pass the eye test but he gets results... I'm going to go ahead and say I'd prefer a player who somehow seems to be a good defender over one who merely looks like one.

By failing the eye test, does falling down on his arse when an ordinary player does a simple cross-over dribble on him count?

Only if it counts for every other player that's happened to. We can cherry pick bad moments for anyone, but it wouldn't tell a fair or complete story, would it?

I'm not high on Vesely. My expectation is that he'll be a bench player, which sucks for a #6 pick. I don't think we had much in the way of better options though, and I'm not going to throw him under the bus until he's actually played in the NBA.

I would hope you realize I'm not cherry picking.

I have your limited observations versus a season's worth of Synergy Sports data. I'm not really sure what else to say, Ruz.

I don't mean that aggressively or meanly or anything like that. It just seems like you're taking a more subjective and limited sample size and taking more out of it than the deeper and more objective data.

Illuminaire, I don't know what to say to you... other than I value my ability to make up my own mind more than you do.

If he had better hands, I'd be excited. His athleticism is elite. No, that's not an exaggeration. You can count on one hand how many players in this league can hit their head on the rim. Howard, McGee, Griffin, Stoudamire-pre injury, and....Jan Vesely.

Good hands equate to easy scoring opportunities in the paint and a greater ability to rebound. Because he lacks great hands, Jan Vesely might struggle in this phases of the game. If he can get better in this area, he will be quite a talent.

I see Vesely as a huge unknown. He could turn out to be very good,
He could be a complete bust. We really have to wait for him to play
for a season or 3. I think this is true of a great number of players
but would seem to be all the more true about Vesely relatively speaking.

there are 2 encouraging things about him, well actually it may be
more like one thing - he reportedly plays REALLY hard and is therefore
a fan favorite. Now we know fans aren't not always all knowing and wise
but I would rather take a chance on a player who the fans love than a
guy who most fans feel is a dog.

Yep, that's why I'm excited to see what he can do.

Long time wiz fan here, I think Jan Vesely is gonna be fun to watch on the fast break, but very painful to watch him getting dunked on and abused in the paint

Maybe. But that also pretty much describes McGee. If folks can get excited about him, why not Vesely?

I wasn't referring to you specifically. I agree with you - both in your assessment of Vesely and in your excitement to see him play. My comment was directed to those who use Vesely's flaws as reasons to hate the pick, only to glorify a guy like McGee who has similar flaws IMO.

Bleacherreport? Seriously? I don't read those no matter what the topic is.

BTW you may want to know that Veselý has received his work permit is flying to Washington tomorrow morning (Wednesday). So we'll sure see soon some training footage to get a better idea.

I absolutely abhor bleachereport. It's a blog passing itself as a sports website...just terrible. I mean honestly...who is hyping Vesely? Not even Wiz fans are hyping the guy, so what hype are they referring to?

I'm just really curious as to what it is that Vesely will be doing in the half-court offense.
