It made me too sad, closg00.

I felt like there was enough bad stuff out there than to think about what possessed that girl to do something so horrific and terrible.

I want to lighten up ...

Greatest Father-Daughter Wedding Dance Ever?

http://nation.foxnews.com/good-news/201 ... dance-ever

Is this the best father-daughter wedding dance ever?

Duo do mashup of Motown, Beyonce and more

By Meghan Keneally, The Daily Mail

Rather than having a tender slow dance with her father at her wedding, one Texas bride decided to have a laugh.

Ashley Richmond married her husband Nicholas in August, but it was the moment she shared with her father and not her new husband that was the scene-stealer.

She and her father David Sparks put on quite the synchronized show, with a medley of Motown classics and top 40 hits.

I haven't seen any better. Great wedding dance moves from a father and daughter who seem really close. The groom seems to have done quite well for himself to marry that young lady.

At the very least, their kids might rhythm and be fun people.

I must be channeling my inner curmudgeon, but that video ain't what's best about sports. It's a nice story. It's very sweet. But what's best about sports is competition. Not the opposition standing around and watching while some guy in a wheelchair fumbles, doesn't notice, then has teammates run and get the ball and give it to him so he can roll into the end zone.

Okay, I'm going to hell.

^ Can't say that you don't have a point. I guess I was making that statement in the context of the lockouts this year. It's definitely easier to watch kids in wheelchairs than yet another episode of "billionaires vs millionaires".

Okay, I'm going to hell.

This mighty wheeled warrior's end around sideswiped the opponent's vaunted yet ultimately porous defense and stealthily slipped forth, propelled forward on the wings of eagles, nay, of angels, rescuing glory from the flaming maw of defeat, and, seemingly then, the entire universe stopped and all men and women were brothers and sisters, coequally sharing in the brilliance of that one moment.

Everyone but you.

Straight to hell.

YOu being an economist, I would commend to you Neal Stephenson's proto-steampunk Baroque Cycle trilogy (Quicksilver, The Confusion, and The System of the World). I'm 3/4's of the way through the ~900 page 3rd book and have enjoyed every frickin' word of it.

'Proto-steampunk' since it takes place during the ea of intellectual firestorm just prior to the invention of machines of industry; 'economist' since it has much to do with the genesis of our modern financial systems.

Yet still is chock fulla piracy, sword play, fencing with witticisms, charming rogues and genius whores. A cracking good read even if it may wallow in discourse on the dawn of Newtonian physics for a chapter or two (Sir Isaac is a key supporting character, not a very sympathetic one either). Still Stephenson knows how to tie many threads together as one. I borrowed the series from the Library and have wracked up enough fines that I should have bought the series. Still I won't count it as sunk cost regretted if I end up buying the three since I'll probably re-read them again. It's been interesting reading this while our own financial structure sorta crumples in under its own weight.

It looks like CCJ's man did very well for himself in Russia.

Report: DeJuan Blair Released By Russian Pro Team After Four Games

After heading to Russia to escape the NBA lockout, it appears DeJuan Blair's experiment with European pro basketball is over just a few games after it began. The team, Krasnye Krylya Samara, announced today that it has released Blair after four games, according to a report from Sportando.net.

As the team's GM explained, "DeJuan helped us to to get to the main draw of VTB League. It was the most important goal for us for the first part of the season. We thank him for the brilliant performances he had in these games."

And Blair seems happy with how it turned out. "My trip to Russia and the performances with the team have been great and very interesting for me. It will be an unforgettable experience. In Russia I have lived in a different culture and the girls are just incredibly beautiful. I found not only a strong team but also good friends that I will visit one day, maybe next summer."

Just caught up with The Walking Dead episode from last week -- the one where Shane and Otis were trapped at the school. The twist at the end is why I love this show. It goes There. :o

Can't wait to see the next episode, which should be waiting patiently for me on my DVR at home.

today is the first day of tryouts for high school basketball

my 14 yo daughter will be trying to make the team.
I think she ultimately will but I am quite nervous about
it as she will be devastated if she does not.

she will probably be the smallest and among the least
athletic among the contending girls but she will also
probably be among the very best shooters there.
This 90 lb kid can hit 3s often enough for one to conclude
it's not an accident when it goes in. Also she is an
outstanding FT and medium range shooter. I just
want to see her make the frosh team and get
a chance to play once in a while.

I'll take her over to the Y and work her out a little
feeding her the ball to shoot for various spots. Then
I'll make her hit 20 FTs. She's made her 20 in as few as
23 attempts and usually shoots at least 75%.
The tryouts conclude on Wed and they announce the team
that afternoon. Fingers crossed until then.

Not to give anything away, but - I will never drink well water again. The Korean guy certainly had an up and down day - in more ways than one.

thanks
she has to split games with her sister

watching the Wiz might not be the best example or perhaps I should
clarify that and say the best POSITIVE example.

hopefully she'll be OK and I'm worrying too much. Thing is, unlike her
sister, she doesn't have a huge social circle to hang with so basketball
would be a helpful distraction for her or an entre to another group of
friends.

Since we don't have a "grooming" thread (maybe we should?), I'll put this here. My two best men's grooming/hygiene discoveries this year:

1. Fresh Balls - Essentially a lotion infused with talc/extracts that keeps the groin area a little fresher than otherwise. Now a must have for me, especially in the summer. I don't think it's in stores, but you can order it online.

2. I just discovered that using a Norelco wet/dry electric shaver with regular shaving gel works GREAT! I usually don't get great shaves from the Norelco, but I have to use it because it's the only thing that isn't completely intolerable for my skin. Ran out of the "goop" they sell specifically for it, and used some old gel I had in the medicine cabinet. It got really close without the need for as much pressure and my face thus isn't as raw as usual.

Sometimes it's the little things that make all the difference...

Good luck to your daughter, jim. I hope she makes it!

When I read the above my first thought was I bet she makes it if she shows toughness (okay, I thought meanness). I bet if she will either set a pick or fight throught the ones other girls set, that could impress the coach. My other thought is that if she's got a good handle that will really impress and make a coach forget about athleticism. Just dribbling the ball during down time can make a coach see your daughter as a fundamentally sound kid who loves the game.

I think most HS coaches will look past a lack of athleticism if they see a baller who can shoot and who is scrappy.

jim, I trust your opinion that your daughter will make it. However, remember Micheal Jordan got cut as a sophomore from his HS team. See what effect that had...
