Re: Darvish bid
Some insight on how the posting system works, etc - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Posting_system
I don't understand how Boston's bid on Dice-K was $11m higher than the next closest bid. An attempt to deter/deny other teams?
$50m is a lot more reasonable than I first thought, but I still think $60m+ makes more sense (whether we'd do that I don't know). Darvish is better than Dice-K.

Re: Darvish bid
Darvish will come no cheaper than 50m, he is the most enticing Japanese FA to be posted since Ichiro. He is only 25 years old, and is a rarity in a Japanese player coming over who (hopefully) has his best days of pro baseball still ahead of him.

Re: Darvish bid
I wouldn't post 50M if i am the Blue Jays, it's just too much for someone who isn't proven! I'd prefer we use that 90-100M to put towards a proven all-star.
Though it would be nice to see Rogers step up even though i wouldn't agree with the total $ spent to acquire him.

The thing is you can't necessarily look at it as 50m dollars standalone. If the overall cost to get Darvish is 100m over 5 years and say a guy like CJ Wilson gets approximately 60-70 over the same term. Having a Japanese "icon" immediately gives Rogers or whoever signs him an additional revenue stream that they would not have otherwise. If the Jays can figure out a way to make 5-6 million dollars a year on Darvish to Japan, that makes his contract just as good as any other big name player available.
I ultimately hope the Jays look long and hard at Darvish, I'm not worried about the money; it will be recouped. However, Darvish is unproven and him dominating in the majors is a definite uncertainty so the move is not without risk. Darvish will need to succeed to be truly valuable to Rogers as a marketing tool and asset to the ball club on the field.

Re: Darvish bid
Yep, he's pretty much every guy's hero and every girl's wet dream over there. Financially, I doubt teams will have trouble breaking even on this investment. The problem is going to that with such a big investment put in place, we'd have to ride him even if he's not pitching well, especially if we don't wanna piss of the Japanese fan base. This could be a serious problem especially since this team has so many good young arms coming up, and this is why I think it's so important that we know what kind of a person Yu Darvish is and how he would handle such a situation.

The MLB is not the only place for pitchers to prove themselves.
I'm putting the over/under at 72.

Darvish’s current team, the Nippon-Ham Fighters, has not yet said if they will post the 25-year-old. As is the case in MLB, teams in Japan tend to hold off on making significant announcements until after the Japan Series concludes. Unfortunately for those hoping for a quick answer, the Series has been delayed because of the earthquakes that shook the country earlier this year. At this point, Morosi says the season may not be over for another week and a half.
This development will likely push back the announcement of a decision, and Morosi states that Darvish’s status may not become officially known until closer to Christmas. Morosi’s source close to Darvish’s club says the right-hander will “more likely than not” be posted, but also said that nothing is definite at this time. While these things normally do take a while to develop, the delayed decision figures to have an impact on current free agent negotiations.

I feel like Toronto should be a player in the Darvish market but if the bid gets to say $60 million I would pull out I mean you could be talking $110 million for him and who knows he could be Dice K v.2 I know he's a lot younger but pitching in the AL East is a whole different animal. The extra revenue would help a bit with the bid but I don't see Toronto having a major Japanese partner like Seattle does when they signed Ichrio and Boston is a elite market to pitch in. We are good but I have a feeling he signs else where.

Re: Darvish bid
The bid is secret and a one-time post, so its not like teams will be going back and forth upping the ante. When the Red Sox posted $50M for Daisuke, there were rumours that it was $10M more than any other team; you just never know. That's what makes this so dicey (pun not intended).
