Fox Sports: Jays seriously interested in Jamey Carroll

Post#1 » by Rhettmatic » Fri Nov 11, 2011 4:40 pm

jonmorosi Jon Morosi
Source: #BlueJays are showing serious interest in Jamey Carroll.

onmorosi Jon Morosi
Source says Jamey Carroll deal is "very close."

He then clarified with this tweet:

jonmorosi Jon Morosi
To be clear, Carroll is close to signing, but not necessarily with Jays. They were one of the teams interested as of yesterday.

Hardly groundbreaking news, but what do you guys think?

he would basically be our starting 2B...he is also 38 years old.

I posted this 1 minute after you Rhettmatic...we may want to merge the two threads

If adding 0 production at 2nd base won't push us over the edge, I have no idea what will.

I would imagine if this happens Carroll would be the replacement for McDonald/McCoy, not the starting 2B. He can play the 2B/SS/3B and the outfield.

I could see him getting the starting job, unfortunately. Also, from this quote, he looks like the type of guy AA likes

Indeed, he seems poised to get a starting job someplace, either at short or at second base, even at age 38, having just batted .290 with a .359 OBP. And he’s thought of as a model baseball citizen, great clubhouse presence kind of guy.

This doesn't mean we're not bringing back Johnson. Carroll is probably the best utility man in the game outside of Cuddyer. I'm loving this signing.

Agreed... unfortunately I'm not a mod on this board so I won't be able to help out on that front.

I updated the title and opening post because Morosi clarified that Carroll is close to signing, but not necessarily with Jays:

Source says #BlueJays were one of the three finalists for Carroll as of yesterday.

I could see Carroll being a fallback in case Johnson doesn't re-sign (or all other options fail), but I find it very hard to believe AA would settle the 2B situation on November 11 when Johnson could still conceivably accept arbitration and come back for one more year. Not to mention AA has liked Johnson for years so he is not going to say "screw it, I'm promising Carroll the spot before I even try to bring KJ back".

Carroll would be a very good bench player. I'd be happy to have him on the team in that capacity. But nothing is confirmed yet and if Carroll is looking for a starting role he probably would go to another team.

Ideally, he's a utility guy. I could live with Carroll being starting 2B though if AA wants to spend big money elsewhere, and can get picks for KJ.

We gotta at least offer KJ arbitration. AA is not giving up those two picks.

I'm hoping this is a depth signing, a clue that the brass have agreed to go for it this year.

If Carroll is the starting 2B in which i expect him to be where ever he signs. Then it's more than likely the plan is not to go for it next year.

Alternatively, a placeholder until Hech is ready to come up in July and Escobar can move over. Then a depth signing/insurance policy. But I just can't believe we're not gonna offer Johnson arbitration, with the understanding that his Type A status reduces his options to sign elsewhere. In interviews, AA has mentioned this exact scenario - i.e. signing Gonzalez before offering arbitration to Scutaro - who was also Type A. Of course, we didn't get as much as we hoped for when Scutaro signed with the Red Sox.

Would be pissed if hes signed and is starting.

Would be a great bench player.

Rather have Johnson to start.

jcrasnick Jerry Crasnick
#Jamey Carroll is closing in on a multiyear deal with Twins, sources say. He would be their everyday SS.
