NHL Lockout - Why No Decert?

Post#1 » by erudite23 » Sun Nov 6, 2011 8:14 am

Can anyone who is familiar with the NHL lockout provide an answer as to why the NHLPA did not decertify?

I've looked around the net and can't find any commentary on it. Anyone? :-?

There was a mutiny in the NHLPA.

NHL players were concerned about their long term livelihood rather than pounding their chests about principle. Simply put, they were smarter than NBA players. Hockey players, in the general sense, don't get spoiled their whole athletic lives like NBA and NFL players do so they don't develop a "the world owes me anything I want because I'm the best" attitude.

This.

Also i'm pretty sure the lawsuit would of went the leagues way. At the time there was no cap, no max salary and a few teams were close to going under. The league needed to make drastic changes to survive, it was a completely different situation.

Hmmmm, that's it? If they were so concerned about their "long term livelihood" like you say, why did they miss a full season? Why not even TRY to decertify? If decertification is such a great way to generate leverage, and the NHL players were so desperate for leverage that they were willing to miss a full season to search for some....why not decertify? I'm just trying to puzzle this out, since this is the only time any major sports league has ever missed a full season in US history.

I'm perplexed.

A ton of players went overseas to play during the lockout, so they didn't need to decertify to gain leverage. Telling the NHL "we don't need you" was their leverage.
