The new NBA?

Post#1 » by Grang33r » Mon Nov 14, 2011 6:38 pm

What the new deal would look like:

In the reimagined, recalibrated N.B.A. of the future, Carmelo Anthony would have a tougher time forcing his way out of Denver. LeBron James would take a steeper pay cut to flee Cleveland. Gilbert Arenas would be a free agent, instead of a payroll albatross.

Contracts would be shorter. Players would become free agents sooner. Making trades would be simpler. The gap between rich and poor teams might be smaller. There might be fewer superteams and more parity, too.

In theory, anyway.

To me, the NBA are fighting real hard for small market teams. This is a landslide win by the owners, but Pacers and 9 others want the BRI to be even higher (53/47). The deal could be better but it seems to me, this is by far the best deal players can get, but also a very good one for the NBA (and fans).

I'm hoping players approve this deal but i have my doubts. Seems like the players are the greedy ones in this situation. Am i alone or do you guys agree?

Too late now.

I've tried to withhold judgement in terms of who is the greedy party. I don't think either side is greedy, just stubborn and prideful. On one hand, the players have been getting 57% and a very cushy deal that the owners agreed to just a few years ago. On the other hand, the owners feel like that was a huge concession and want to even it up. But the owners are asking for too much too fast while the players were sitting on the better end of the deal, so it created this initial rift. Obviously, I feel like my opinion is biased towards the small-market owners, but they seem to be the hardliners for the owners.
