Re: Who's side are you on? (Lockout)
I'm pro having NBA games. So I suppose I'm against the group that are stopping the NBA from happening. Since this is a lock-out, that would be the owners.
I'm not really pro-player, but I just wish the owners would end the lockout and let there be games!

I've paid little attention to the CBA discussions, but probably the player's side with the BRI concession they've made. I thought that was the argument - and it looks fine and dandy to me.
The players should absolutely take this deal, though. They'll never get a better offer. The owners will slaughter them.

I was on the players side in that I thought they were giving up more but then they didn't take the deal. Now I have flip flopped and hope MJ leads the owners and post playing career creamates this next generation of NBA players like he did his generation.

props to Turbozone for the sig

Re: Who's side are you on? (Lockout)
im dont feel sorry for the players at all, what is in minimum salery in the NBA? well last season a player with 0 years playing experince recived a contract worth $473,604
here is a table real quick:2010-11
years in
service:
0 473,604
1 762,195
2 854,389
3 885,120
4 915,852
5 992,680
6 1,069,509
7 1,146,337
8 1,223,166
9 1,229,255
10+ 1,352,181
now if i made $473,000 this year just to play ball I would be happy, and I remember seeing some
of the players saying how hard it was growing up with no money and how there parents
would have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to get by
not saying that is a example for all players but it going back to a lifestyle you had before you made it
to the nba is certilnly not a option foe most
but it pisses me off when players like Derek Fisher who had made roughly $73-76 million
over his carrer not including his 10.5 deal he has now complian about money!!!!!
wtf i got kids and struggle to get by and **** like that complain about money go f yourself
oh real quick 1 more example, when the T wolves offerd to extend latrell spreewell's contract
he said no, while pulling up to practice in his Phantom he said somthing along the lines of
how am i gonna feed my family, SMFH
sorry to rant on but this situation has really pissed me off and its way past basketball
Edit: btw i forgot to add i anint mad that these players make that kind of money, all the power to them, I am just mad the way they act like a million aint ****, when right now people struggle
to get by

This argument, just looking at player's salaries and saying they are too high, is way too simplistic.
So what if a zero-year player makes just under $500k. If you were approximately top-500 in the world at something as lucrative as basketball, you better hope you'd be paid at least that much. What do you think the top 500 bankers, investors, doctors, etc. make in the world? It's a whole lot more than that figure.
Looking at players salaries only makes sense in the context of the NBA as a business, seeing it's total revenues, profitability, etc. - that's why you see them discussing %'s (BRI) and not whole numbers.

Neither really. But if I really have to vote, I would side with the players.
I really don't like the rhetoric coming out from the owners side. Giving them an ultimatum is bullying and unnecessary. The players give them 50/50 BRI, which is quite a bit considering it was 57% for the players, the owners wouldn't give much back. Now you force the union hands and go nuclear. We will see what happens, but the owners get exactly what they deserve.
Remember no one force the Wizards signing Gilbert Arenas or the Magic signing Rashard Lewis and no one forced Colangelo to sign Turkoglu.

I watch basketball to see players like Lebron and Kobe, not Jerry Buss or Mark Cuban, the players make this league owners have no right to demand a 50-50 split along with changes in the system.
The owners take all of the risk... I think it is a fair trade off.

I bet top 500 Teachers don't make anywhere close to $500k.

They also probably don't generate 4 billion in direct revenue every year.

Yeah, players like POB & Hoffa were definitely the reason the NBA generated 4 billion in direct revenue.

How is that relevant? There are a set number of NBA players every season and the league generates around 4 billion in direct revenue. All you've done is say that some guys are worth more than others. That isn't exactly a shock.
You want to compensate the real revenue generators fairly? Fine, let's go free market. No CBA, only normal labour law. Lebron can make his 50 million. I'm sure small market owners would love that. Of course, they probably wouldn't be small market owners for very long, since they'd all start moving to bigger markets. Or folding. Good times!

Re: Who's side are you on? (Lockout)
Basketball is a simple game. You practice, play, repeat.
Most guys that played sports would give their left nut to be paid 500K a year for 10 years to play a sport that they have fun playing.
Those same people would probably not want to do all of the schooling to become a Cardiologist & would probably not even want to do the job.
It's impossible to compare an NBA player to a CEO, or a Doctor, or a Judge, etc. Their path to the NBA was a much, much easier path & many of them were treated like royalty from a very early age (just because they were good at a sport). Life has been easy for them.
The average Joe could care less how much revenue the NBA generates. It really has nothing to do with raptor95's point.
Professional athletes are privleged. It's like winning the freakin lottery.

I wonder how many teachers travel the country first class, at their employers' expense. Or get $500,000+ jobs after one year of college.

As one of the bottom players in the NBA, he sold more jerseys than all the teachers in North America combined!
