UFC on Fox (1/28): Munoz out; Sonnen/Bisping, Evans/Davis

Post#1 » by Posey H8er » Sun Nov 20, 2011 6:37 am

Apparently Dana is telling the FOX executives the headliners on Monday so we could very well learn the names on this card then. The UFC is long overdue for a Chicago return especially with their awful event of Silva vs Cote a few years back.

Dana also said the headliner would be a huge fight...but not a title fight.

I think it will be Rashad vs. somebody. Forrest would be the biggest name, but its a rematch that nobody is really calling for, with Rashad winning the first one and Forrest coming off a loss. Rampage? He might be disappointed about not fighting in Japan, but he would probably take home a ton of money for it. Could just be the Phil Davis fight again.

Doesn't make sense to give up another title fight, even if it's BW, just because of the precedent.

Rashad, Rampage, Forrest, Fitch and Maynard are pretty much the only elite guys without fights lined up. Rashad vs. Forrest probably makes the most sense and is a big fight by name value, even if no one is really clamoring to see it.

I'd prefer to see Rashad vs. Phil Davis and see Rampage rematch Forrest in Japan.

Forrest should be nowhere near Rashad right now. He hasn't done anything to earn a fight against him, especially since coming off a knockout loss.

I wouldn't mind having Rashad wait (again) for Jones to see Rashad vs Davis letting Hendo get a titleshot. But that's probably the selfishness in me since there's a good chance I'll go to this card.

If I have to guess maybe Rashad Evans Vs Phil Davis may happen, or Chael Sonnen Vs Munoz , or Forrest Griffin vs someone else not name Rashad nor Rampage but I can't think of anyone right now.

Maybe someone we haven't mention might part of the card & that is Tito Ortiz.

Forrest stinks. In the last three years he's beat Tito and Rich Franklin (who also sucks).

I don't even count the win against Shogun to be honest. Shogun looked like he was shot and fighting on a 1/3 of a lung.
The only win that means anything to Forrest is the Rampage win, and the Bonner win (though beating Bonner means nothing really).

The guy proves why marketing yourself is almost as important as winning...because I think he stinks, but still love to watch him fight and root him on every time.

Ellenburger vs Diego would be a great fight to put on that card, but not sure if Diego would be ready to go by then.

Hmmm...just some random thoughts:

HW: Cain vs Carwin or Mir vs Carwin.

LHW: Forrest vs Rampage

MW: Phil Davis vs Munoz

WW: Ellenburger vs Diego

Cain vs. Carwin makes sense, but not for this show. Carwin is out til Spring (at least) and Cain likely won't be fighting til then anyway. Mir vs. Carwin doesn't make sense for several reasons. Mir is fighting Big Nog, and Carwin is injured. Plus they already fought, and it wasn't the kind of fight that makes you want to see a rematch a few fights later. I think Mir is being groomed for a title shot (he's never fought JDS, nor Cain for that matter, and he'll always be a marketable challenger with a few wins strung together), so I don't think they would want to put him in there with Carwin again.

Rampage vs. Forrest seems to make a lot of sense, either for the Fox show or the Japan show. I think it would be better suited toward Fox, so Rampage might not get to fight in Japan. He'll get over it.

Phil Davis is a LHW.

I really like the idea of Ellenberger vs. Diego. I think Ellenberger needs one more name win to get a title shot, and Diego could put him over the top. And I just think it would be a fun fight. That being said, this is a co-main event at best for a Fox show, IMO. This is the kind of fight I could get behind as a main event for the first FX show, if they want to make a splash, but they might not care to.

Yea, Mir vs Carwin rematch makes about as much sense as a Mir vs Nog rematch.

Ultimate Rematch Championships.

haha, that's like the 7th time i've called Davis a MW. For some reason I keep thinking he is.

I personally think it'll be the Rampage vs Forrest fight as well.
Both are mainstream, with big names and throw punches.

Interesting thing Dana said at the presser the other night:
When someone asked if he wished the hendo/Shogun fight had been on Fox, Dana replied with you don't know how to grow the business. If that fight had been on TV, we'd be in ****. The hardcore fans respect the hell out of what happened, and how much heart and talent was on display, but the casual viewer would see it and think they should stop the fight.

I thought that was interesting. Not that they would be bored, but that the sight of two men, exhusted, but still fighting would repel the new viewer, and after thinking about it. I think he might be right.
The idea of a quick knock out is much easier to ease viewers to the sport than a bloody mess of a fight or a one where both guys can barely walk at the end.

Phil Davis was supposed to fight Rashad Evans, and then Machida. If he's healthy I think he'll make this card.

Other fighters I'd like to see are Struve, mighty mouse, and Gray Maynard.

I still can't believe that Miguel Torres wasn't on the main card in the last event. I would love to see him fight in Chicago.

Dana talks out of his ass a lot of times. He's not going to disrespect JDS and Cain for putting on a quick fight. Remember, Forrest and Bonner helped bring in a ton of casual fans with a 3 round brawl that wasn't nearly as technical as the Hendo/Shogun fight.

An exciting bantamweight matchup between Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson and Eddie Wineland is being targeted for the UFC's second card for Fox in January, according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.

This is from Dana White on twitter but it was four hours ago.

Taking off from LA to Vegas. Let me get these contracts signed and I will announce the FOX Chicago fights!

I think most likely will find out tomorrow about the card, or tonight the earliest(doubt it though but who knows.)
