Jay Cutler thumb injury (Season Ending?)

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Nov 21, 2011 3:12 am

This deserves it's own thread instead of staying in the game thread. According to the NBC Crew, Jay Cutler is easily replaceable since Chicago has a good defense. Sorry, but that made me laugh. Right when things have been going great for Chicago this happens.

Both ESPN Chicago and the Chicago Sun Times report that Jay Cutler's fractured right (throwing) thumb may end his season.
Per the Sun Times' Sean Jensen, "there is a fear" that Cutler may not play again this year, but "there will be more tests." ESPN Chicago's Mike Wright is "hearing" that there is "a chance" this could be it for Cutler's 2011 season. Wright also reports that Cutler will require surgery, so this is clearly a more significant thumb break than Ben Roethlisberger's. Caleb Hanie would take over as the Bears' starter, much to Mike Martz's chagrin.

That really sucks. I always thought he was insanely overrated, but he was really putting it together this year and I thought he worked his way into the top 10 QB's.

Well this really opens the door for a few teams to snag the wildcard.

Now is the time to trade Forte my fantasy compadres!

Eh, maybe top 10 was over ambitious, I was just counting on my hands, not so sure now.

He has been great since October started. Even the MNF debacle against Detroit Cutler was very impressive. That is a huge loss if it's legit, and I have no reason to doubt this source.

Cutler was def. top 10 this season. You have to consider his WRs are subpar and the offense is very complex to operate. The line has improved quite a bit but it's still not a good one either.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

Agreed. He was having the best year of his career, and the Bears were probably more well-rounded and better poised to make serious playoff noise than they were last year, when they lucked into the NFC title game. Their only hope now is to split the next 6 with Hanie and maybe get Cutler back for the playoffs. At least their schedule is easy the rest of the way.

Against the packers it shouldn't make much of a difference since Cutler always stinks up the joint but this is a huge loss overall. I don't see them winning a playoff game without him. There are no crappy sub .500 teams in the playoffs for them to feast on.

I DESPISE Cutler, but I thought he was playing great this year and I was actually a little bit happy for the guy.

This sucks for them.

I would hold on to him. I mean, he's going to consistently be getting 25-30 touches now. Not too tough for him to break one or two of those to make up for all the 1-yard carries into 9-man fronts.

Update:

The Bears confirmed Monday that Jay Cutler will need surgery on his fractured right (throwing) thumb.
The Bears will not give a timetable, only saying that they are hopeful Cutler can return before the end of the regular season. We wouldn't bet on it. Initial reports had Cutler out 6-8 weeks, making a Week 17 return a best-case scenario. He can be dropped in all fantasy formats as Caleb Hanie takes over for the foreseeable future.

As a Bears fan, I'm not too worred about it. Jay could return for the playoffs, and I'm confident we'll make a wildcard without him. Our defense, special teams, and running game have all contributed far more to our success than our passing game, and in the NFC Championship game, I thought that Hanie looked better than Cutler. Here's our remaining schedule:

@ Oakland
vs. Kansas City
@ Denver
vs. Seattle
@ Green Bay(may rest starters if they have the #1 seed locked up)
@ Minnesota

I see us finishing 4-2, with an 11-5 record. Good enough for a wildcard.

Cutler was playing well this year, but he wasn't beasting. He's got an 86 QBR for the season.
