Orton Claimed by Chiefs, Bears sign Josh McCown

Post#1 » by ChronicKerr » Tue Nov 22, 2011 9:11 pm

Per Schefter tweet.

He wouldn't want to come back here now, would he? I hope we put in a claim. You'd think KC and/or Houston would be in on this as well.

They'd be dumb to not put a claim in on him. I don't really like him as a QB, but he's the only guy out there who knows this personnel and has a shred of talent.

Time for Angelo to rescind his offer to "Happy" Henry Burris and sign Orton. Much better option right now.

Mike Klis of Denver Post reports Orton invited release from Broncos after Jay Cutler was injured. Would invite a return to Chicago.

Sign him and put a short leash on Hanie.

I'd give Hanie the opportunity first, if he falls on his face hard, It's Orton 2.0 time. Hanie's mobility is the only edge that keeps me from wanting to put in Orton outright. We don't have the offensive line that we did when Orton was our QB and his lack of mobility has a lot of potential to really kill us. Hanie deserves a shot.

Completely agree we should scoop him up. Although I'd put the playbook knowledge over personnel knowledge. There's no way Lovie lets Orton run anything but standard sets in Martz's offense when he barely opened up Ron Turner's playbook during Orton era 1.0. Another reason you could argue why Orton shouldn't be signed.

I'd sign him before anyone else on the market. Then I'd resign him for next year.

Geez....what's the final scoreboard on the Cutler trade now? Lol

That would be crazy awkward lol

At this point its not about Hanie or Orton its about how willing and capable of making adjustments to his offense is Martz .

Now, since he's on waivers, the Bears have to wait until all the teams with worse records pass, which isn't a given. Houston is already passing. Will Kansas City? That's my biggest question.

Sounding positive so far - hopefully our claim goes through.

Teams with playoff aspirations shouldn't be an injury away from having Enderle as their QB.

actually we ran a successful no huddle offense the last time Orton was here . We havent run anything like that since . Orton has also proven himself to be a much better passer than anyone thought he was when he left .

What Orton would have right from the start is Lovies and the defenses trust but what it all comes back to is how can Mike Martz adapt to his personnel.

Jay was more mobile and liked to move around whereas with Kyle the ball is coming out fast .

Martz picked his last replacement qb and that guy blew lol so he has no choice but to roll with it .

I supported Orton fully when he was here. I remember me and you were pretty much the only full on supporters. (formally BULL even PAX)

I'm all for signing him, but Hanie deserves a fair shot. If he fails, keep the leash short and let Orton take over. I think Kyle's style, which you mentioned, might fit the under neath routes our receivers run. BUT, our receivers don't run routes well enough for great execution. Cutler worked better because he bought time when it was needed. I think our O-line is just too weak for a flat foot QB to succeed.

oh I agree Hanie deserves his shot to show his progress . I would give him probably even two weeks if showed some spark this Sunday even in a loss .

Seems a lot of people here don't realize how important the familiarity with the offense is. Martz's passing game is all about timing, putting the ball at a spot and expecting the receiver to be there, and it's notoriously hard to pick up for receivers who only need to learn one position, let alone a QB who needs to know all the routes and all the protections. Behind this line with the defense out for blood, Orton would fail miserably.

Hanie will do fine. Cliff Levingston has heard the Bears are more interested in getting Orton back as a backup for next season and beyond more so than this one, so grabbing him for the rest of this year just gets him in the system sooner. If we need him to play, it likely means we've lost 3 in a row.

I'm all about Orton as a backup option for next year. I doubt he could come in here and run Martz offense. We have to go with Hanie now. If he does well and wants to resign next year - great. We'd have our choice between him & Orton.

My guess is Martz is out next year and Tice is the OC. That's the only way I see Lovie not letting Tice go be the OC for the Titans over the summer. In that case, I think the Bears like Orton as a solid backup, maybe the best backup in the league?

Guys like JT O'Sullivan and McCown may be more familiar with Martz's system but are they even in game shape? We can't throw Enderle in there if Hanie goes down so it makes sense to nab Orton and get him started on an abbreviated version of the offense. Agree that if we're looking for Orton to come in and start right away it's a recipe for disaster. That being said, I'm sure he'd do better than Enderle even if he had to go in the huddle and draw up plays in the palm of his hand (remember those days?).

If the Bears want Orton as a backup for next year, he'd have all off-season to become familiar with the system regardless if they signed him now or in free agency. Not sure how much of a difference getting in the last few weeks of this year would matter.

There's not much to lose by signing him after he clears waivers. It would just be a cheap 6 game rental, where he likely would not even play. O'Sullivan and mccown may be familiar with the offense, but that doesn't guarantee they would perform well. See Collins, Todd. Seems like the interest is mutual with Orton and the bears.
