You can blitz and still be vanilla and you can still blitz without intensity.

Why go all out and risk guys getting tired (by seasons end) and possibly getting injured when you don't need to.

And why use your best plays and schemes when you don't need to.

This team is 10-0 and has pretty much been in complete control of every game they have played.

And the few times when they have needed a big stop to win a game this season (Saints,Chargers) the defense has come up with the stop every time.

I think this defense has been coasting for the most part, unless guys like Woodson and Matthews forgot how to play football and Capers forgot how to put together solid schemes.

I think we will see a different defense Thursday in Detroit,I think this is the week Capers starts to ''dial it up'' and the player's intensity goes up a few notches

I agree completely. I have to believe that any game where we see Matthews attacking from the same position all game, Capers is being vanilla. We saw in the Minnesota game that DC still knows how to put pressure on a QB.

I have a feeling that we are going to start seeing MUCH better performances from our D as the regular season comes to an end. IIRC, last year our defense was a big complaint during the first half of the season, but then ended up becoming one of the best in the league by the end.

So while I haven't been exactly enthused by our defense's performance thus far, I'm still on wait and see mode.

I think you two are thinking with your hearts and hoping for it being a scheme thing, not your eyes.

Capers is running the exact same blitzes he was running last year, they simply aren't getting to the QB at near the same rates. In fact, he's blitzing more this year.

McGinn talks about it all the time in his columns about why the defense is struggling so much more this year and it has nothing to do with Capers and scheme.

Raji isn't winning any pass rush battles like he did last year, even when he's single blocked. Jenkins was second on the team in sacks and pressures last year, but he's not here anymore. These two factors have combined to create a massive void in interior pressure which wreaks havoc on any QB. Our DL as a group has been absolutely atrocious in beating lineman to create pressures or at least collapse the pocket. Walden rarely ever can beat a tackle for pressure. Clay has been better than his sack numbers, but i do wonder if he's nursing and injury because last year when he got single blocked, he generally was a terror. This year, not as much. Then again, offenses don't have to really fear a single other pass rusher among our DL and LB this year. Teams have adjusted to the Woodson blitz in most cases. This is all a huge problem and really handcuffing Capers.

In the secondary, for whatever reason, both Tramon and Shields are just getting beat more often than last year and often for big gains. We see it happen all the time. Part of it though i'm sure is that Capers has to blitz so much this year to create any pressure because of the lack of skilled pass rushers renders rushing just four to generally be futile. Sending 5-6 guys leaves corners exposed more. Can leave linebackers and safeties one on one with skilled tight ends. With Collins out and Peprah/Hawk/Bishop all being poor in coverage, that creates big problems if the blitz doesn't get home quickly.

Conversely, Bill Simmons is picking against us.

LIONS (+6.5) over Packers
I forgot one more thing I'm thankful for: That the Lions won't bring down Thanksgiving for the umpteenth consecutive year. The Lions were like our annoying uncle who we had to deal with every Turkey Day — they had a bad comb-over and horrible breath, drank too much, made bad jokes, used inappropriate language at the table and eventually hit you up for money at the end of the night. They weren't even unintentionally funny like Uncle Eddie in the Griswold/Vacation movies, just depressing and awful.

But this year? They're just good enough to make this game interesting. You know their crowd will be all kinds of fired up, you know the dome will be rocking, you know they'll be coming after Rodgers, you know they'll be able to throw the ball, and you know that extra-short week helps them at least a little … right? It's the biggest game of their season — hands down — whereas for the Packers, it's just another big game for an undefeated team that's been wearing a bull's-eye for the past month. (Historically, we've seen these undefeated juggernauts wear down right around Thanksgiving — it's just too hard to play a playoff game week after week after week. Even the 2007 Pats started to let down in late November, barely beating Philly at home in Week 12, then squeaking out a no-way-they-should-have-won game in Baltimore the following week.) The Lions also have an ace in the hole — Cinderella story Kevin Smith, whose career (we thought) had ended because of knee problems, and then suddenly there he was last weekend, scampering around like LeSean McCoy. This might be the first comeback by any Kevin Smith that actually works! (Sorry, I had to.) How can you pick against the Lions this weekend? How can you NOT want to root for an upset and a packed house of delirious Detroit fans losing their ****? And how will my wife react when I'm not helping her for three solid hours even though we have two kids and 11 people coming over for Thanksgiving?

Lions are the sexy pick this week.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

The kiss of death from Peter King has been delivered; Heady Pete picks GB 33, Det 23

Green Bay Packers (10-0) at Detroit Lions (7-3)
History lesson for you courtesy of Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, from my podcast this week: The Packers and Lions played every year on Thanksgiving in Detroit between 1951 and 1963. Suggestion for the NFL courtesy of me: Since Green Bay coach Mike McCarthy likes playing on Thanksgiving -- he told me the other day his players love the mini-bye that follows the game, and it's only a one-hour flight from Green Bay to Detroit -- why not renew the tradition? What would be better than an annual game between these great rivals, with two top young quarterbacks, for the next decade? As for this game, until I see it with my own eyes this year, I don't trust anyone to hold Aaron Rodgers down.

The Packers aren't running enough out of the shotgun this year. If a DLine is coming on fierce, you let the ends come forward and run the draw. I have visions of Wynn in '07 vs. NYG or BJack last year @NE. You gotta think that splitting Jermike to one side, Jordy and Greg to the other, a simple fake hitch would grab the attention of LBs and safeties and create enough room to run.

Have we run Cobb this year? I vaguely remember him being in the backfield for 1 play, but I've been known to finish a 6er of Bartels&James during games this year.

p.s. Happy Thanksgiving

p.p.s. Does Mike Neal's return allow us to play a 3-3-5 instead of the 2-4-5 on 3rd down? I could see Neal/Raji/Wynn - Walden/Bishop/Clay - Shields/Wood/Tramon/Pep/Burnett. Walden's been solid in coverage and seems faster than Hawk.

I don't remember when, but he got one carry for a couple yards. Might've been one of the minnesota games.
