Jays inquire: Yonder Alonso (1B)

A 1B prospect that can't put up a .200 ISO in the minors scares me. I mean it is possible that he can develop some power later on, but we haven't seen it yet.

How is he overrated? Has he ever been labeled an elite prospect or something?

Not really, no. Probably always top 30-100 (and he's a 1B), but losing prospect value as he doesn't improve year after year. He's still overrated if real live human beings are jumping at the notion of trading Morrow or Romero for him.

edit: Alonso apparently signed a major league contract out of the draft. He's only under team control for one more season? Is that right? Also, he has a $100 incentive for winning the MVP in his contract. That's awesome. Nevermind, on rotoworld it says $100k for MVP.

Alonso doesn't seem like a worthwhile investment to me. He's not going to be an elite or close to elite 1B.

His OPS has never been higher than .860 in the minors, and while he has solid patience it doesn't make up for his lack of power. His defense is apparently not good either. So I don't see how he's much of an improvement over Encarnacion or Lind. Rather not waste assets on a player who won't pan out to be any better than that. If we're looking for any player on that roster I would hope it's Brandon Phillips

He has the same numbers as David Cooper and is the same age. If anything Cooper is a bit better.

Major league contracts don't affect your service time calculation (have to be on the active roster for that); he's still under team control for another five years or thereabouts, but his option years have to be pretty well burned.

I don't, but Cooper has shown better numbers. Using this translation tool (http://mlsplits.drivelinebaseball.com/mlsplits/mlecalc) to translate Cooper’s numbers this year to louisville (alonso’s team), we get: .342/.422/.505, which is still much better than alonso’s line this year: .296/.374/.486. although Cooper’s wOBA+ was 119 vs. Alonso’s 114, which suggests their seasons were basically equivalent (assuming the overall quality of hitters in both leagues is the same)

This guy is Cooper with more hyped and consistency with slightly lower numbers.
