It is so much fun to watch another "Dream Team" go down in flames. But I do feel sorry for the Philly fans, having their hopes dashed yet again.

if I was a conspiracist, I would wonder about Maclin. He's been
a culpable party in 3 or their losses. I like Philly but this game
(and probably others) showed the importance of line play.
PHL did a poor job protecting Vick and CHI did an excellent
job protecting Cutler. So CHI won.

tryout update after day 1 - Jacqui said there were 32 frosh girls.
My understanding is that ~15 will make the frosh team. A couple of
those frosh will play above the freshman team on JV or possibly even
varsity (I doubt varsity actually, there are no freshman girls that
studly that I know of). Jacqui said there were a cadre of girls (maybe 5-10)
that showed up that have basically no chance due to lack of skills
and/or lack of experience. So I'm feeling better already.

big congrats to my daughter Jacqui for making the freshman team.
I was unbelievably nervous as I stood waiting in a hallway in the school
for about an hour with all the other parents doing the same thing.
Can't say how relieved I was when she emerged with a big smile
and a hug for her dad announcing "I made it".

Now the real work begins. 6 days a week practice and competition
for playing time.

As a matter of principal, Penn State should eliminate its entire football program permanently. The university has allowed itself to be corrupted by a game. makes me sick. Guys like Sandusky don't exist w/o guys like Paterno protecting them (either explicitly, or passively).

my other daughter participated in a Speech/debate competition
over the weekend. It was her first and though I thought she performed
reasonably well, she didn't win anything. Which is OK.

What I really wanted to say was how impressive quite a few of these
kids were. Seriously. Very impressive. Our future may not be as bad as
some fear.

ps on Jacqui - I asked her over the weekend if she was the best
shooter on the team. She said yeah. FWIW - She wasn't bragging. I asked
her and that was her answer. And she might be wrong. IDK yet. Parents
are NOT allowed at these practices.

first scrimmage (against another team) is later this week. First real game is 11/29.

1st scrimmage tonight- we'll see how much PT my kid gets

my wife is all concerned after the parents meeting Monday when the
varsity coach, a name some of you will know, Christie Scott-Winters,
told the parents to lay off the refs.

the scrimmage was a total mismatch in favor of SLHS. I felt bad for
the opp (Annadale). In 4 Qs of play, they never made a FG.

With the game so lopsided, our coach was substituting liberally
and everyone got solid minutes.

I think this team is going to be fun to watch. The girls have a lot
of camaraderie and a decent mix of talent. That said, I won't be going
out on any limbs by predicting that their opponents will generally
be much better than what they faced last night. It was like a decent
travel team against an average/below avg house league team.

Jacqui was very briefly on TV on NBC4 Thu night. One of the girls
on her team has a father in the AF. He got leave and came home from
Korea last week. They surprised his own daughters at school walking in
during lunch. It was a very touching moment.

scrimmage again tonight vs Edison. I hope the girls have more of
a challenge than they did at the last scrimmage.

Dexter update. IMO, Geller is the paranoid delusions of Travis. Geller's skeletal remains will be found in the season finale "reveal".

Happy thanksgiving all. The family drama has already begun at my household - an argument over bread.

LOL, ours is yet to be determined.

Speaking of serial killers (Dexter, I mean; not pancakes' relatives), I started watching the BBC America series - Luther - I like it better than Dexter, though to be honest - I think Dexter's a bit overrated, and they're very different shows. Anyway, fans of The Wire probably are already familiar with Luther - as the very talented Idris Elba is the star. And fans of The Office knew him as Charles Miner. It's almost hard to believe he's the same actor - they're such different characters and accents.

Dang, pancakes, sorry to hear that. Things could REALLY get out of hand when it comes time for dessert. :)

My two older sisters literally fought one year over a dispute about the last piece of mom's french cherry pie. :-?

oh, dessert arguments is a given, but bread really threw me for a loop. we had friends on top of family this year so the pressure was turned up a notch.

black friday shopping notification: 70% off a $300 blazer is the crown jewel. $30 underarmour basketball shoes (will let you know how they run) was a half decent deal. Football scented man-candle from "as seen on TV" store may sentimentally be my favorite purchase but... DO NOT GET THE BACON SCENT. THEY HAVE NOT PERFECTED THE BACON-TO-WAX TECHNOLOGY YET.

and yup. scored tickets to the UVa/VT game last second so i'm dropping an impromptu weekend excursion to charlottesville to witness the commonwealth cup. just patiently waiting for my friend to get here so we can get a move on. may collegiate sports keep us occupied until the NBA resumes. HAPPY HOLIDAYS GUYS!

what with the season, well lets say a season back on track to happen,
I watched an old re-run of the Wiz vs BOS from last year last night, the
recording stopped before the very end but lasted just long enough to
see Wall accidentally bank in a 3 with about a min to play giving us
an improbable W.

One EXTREMELY hopeful thing about this coming year is that
we will no longer be forced to watching the incredible suck of Yi.
No telling how many more games we might win for this reason alone.

Where's Hoopalotta? I feel like he doesn't get news so fast wherever he is, so maybe he doesn't know we're actually going to have a season. I miss that weirdo.
