What do you need to see from Patrick Patterson this season?

Post#1 » by Mr. E » Sun Nov 27, 2011 9:27 pm

Going to start these back up to discuss our guys now that the season is coming. I want to lead off with the brightest young player on our team, Patrick Patterson.

I know that we have a glut at the PF position (especially if we resign Hayes and get a FA center); but I'm really excited to see what this kid does over this shortened season. I think that he'll be entering the season as the first big off of the bench (ahead of Hill), and should be Scola's primary backup. The guy shows a lot of tenacity and seems to have a pretty high BBIQ.

What do you need to see from Patterson this season?

Do you think that we need to look ahead and move Scola to let Patterson start?

Do you think that we should use him as trade bait to try to upgrade at another position?

What are your expectations from the Man who Never Got a Fixed Nickname?

I dont think Patterson has the tool to be an elite defender. He was considered a below average rebounder even in college and he's not much of a shot bocker.

More of the same last year with more minutes is fine imo because he was very good in limited time. He's a heady player that knows his role. He had uncommon poise for a rookie.

Dont expect him to hit every single jumpshot he takes. That would be an unrealistic expectation. He's a solid shooter but imo he was just on a super hot streak.

Better rebounding. He seems nice so far other than that.

If not rebounding, then better scoring to increase his trade value...

I am hopping the Rockets trade Scola although I don't think anybody wants that contract. To me he is this years Lowry just give him the time and he will play big. I hope he gets at least 25 mins a game

You can be a great defender without being a shot blocker or rebounder.

I agree. Especially for his height. Patterson is not far behind though. Hayes averages 10.4 rebounds per 36 minutes, Patterson is at 8.3 as a rookie. Patterson averaged an impressive 1.54 blocks per 36 for an undersized rookie, while Hayes is just at 0.85. Patterson had a very respectable rookie campaign. He can improve all across the board, but I disagree that he doesn't have the tools to be a great defender and is currently below average.

i need to see him earn a solid rotation in playing time. the way he does that is solid rebounding and solid defense first, then take advantage when he gets opportunities on offense.

I don't see Patterson as a high-caliber starting PF, but I see him as a 7th-8th man in the rotation in a year or two. This guy is incredibly solid. He is strong as an ox, shoots a good mid range jumper, rebounds and blocks shots effectively. He is a basketball player, not some guy who happens to be tall and athletic. He's not an amazing athlete by any means, but he makes up for it with his basketball IQ, strength, and reliable nature (ie. see not Jordan Hill).

Whenever I saw him come into the game, I'd shout "HORACE GRANT" (this is when I'm watching the game w/ someone else, not by myself, lol). I don't know if he'll turn out as good as him, but if he improves his rebounding, he can serve a similar sort role, a sound defensive PF that can stick the mid range jumpshot, essentially a guy that every team would love to have. He's strong, and surprised me with some of the athleticism he displayed last season, and with his activity, I don't think it'd be too far fetched to claim he could become a well above average defender. He only played three games last season w/ 30 or more minutes, averages of 15/9 in those games on 55%.

i dont think he needs to big improvements in his 2nd year. only played about 15mpg, so he's bound to get at least 20mpg this season. his numbers will go up.

i'm ok wth slight improvements in his offense and rebounding. i'd like to see more rebounding definitely. i forget how good his jumpers were but according to hoopdata, he doesnt shoot a lot of them. he could work on that, and scoring within a few feet from the basket. i think those two things are his entire offense?

You know, at first I thought "No way, Hogra was MUCH better than Patterson was last year", but after looking at the per-36's, and especially his rook year... I smiled.
