Jose Molina signs with Tampa Bay

Post#1 » by dagger » Mon Nov 28, 2011 3:15 pm

jaysonst Jayson Stark
#Rays deal with Jose Molina guarantees him $1.5 M in 2012, plus $1.5M team option or $300,000 buyout in 2013.

Probably more than I would have paid him. This will stand as my contribution to any appreciation thread.

If the Florida teams want to divest themselves of their anglos so they can sign only Latins, I can think of a pitcher or two on the Rays who we could use.

I would have done that deal for the Jays. Depending on the progess of TD we could always buy him out next year.

Always liked Molina, sad to see him go.

I would have given that deal to Molina as well. Good back-up catcher and he actually hit while he was here.

If they feel McDonald is worth that much, then I don't see why Molina isn't. Good deal for the Rays, IMO.

The value Molina brought to the team easily warrants such a deal, definitely sad to see him go. Wonder who will be targeted as a potential back up?

We offered him arb, so we get picks right? If so, I'm sad to see him go in the sense that he's a decent back-up, but it's great that he left because we get a sandwich pick (correct?)

yes, sandwich pick for losing molina (type b). still think that there would have been more value keeping him due to the new cba imposing a budget of sorts to sign draftees + the fact that we are given an additional first rounder for failing to sign beede.

Does anybody know if the draft signing bonus limit is fixed, or if it depends on how many picks you have?

As I said in the previous thread, he's well worth what the Rays will be paying him. Quite the bargain really.

Certainly not Varitek, he can barely move anymore. Would prefer Chris Snyder.
