Heat Market: Miami's point guard targets

Post#1 » by Dr Cracker » Thu Dec 1, 2011 5:57 pm

Do the Heat need a point guard?

Put it this way: they don't even have a real point guard on the roster.

Sure, Eddie House qualifies as a point guard in the vertical sense, but the job description of a point guard generally requires successfully dribbling the ball up the court. Dwyane Wade and LeBron James can make cameos running the offense, but they're only point guards on a part-time basis. Heat draftee Norris Cole isn't signed yet. Inking him will happen momentarily, but he will potentially be stale -- not fresh -- from the Horizon League.

You get the point.

Mario Chalmers, as we previewed in Wednesday's edition, will most likely be reeled back to the Heat next season on a multi-year deal. Heat owner Micky Arison included Chalmers on his "Welcome back" roll call on Twitter, but there are no guarantees in free agency. The Heat may have to bolster their roster with at least one free agent point guard.

Who will it be?

The following are the realistic outside candidates to join the Heat:

I'd take West or Stuckey if they came cheap...

wish we could nab Delonte with some kinda magic guarantee that he wouldn't flip out and negatively affect the team's locker room in any way.

Assuming Lebron and Delonate are cool, he'd be a great fit, assuming the lambs don't start crying for him again.

I been saying if there is no truth to the Delonte rumors and Lebron is cool with it, he is our best option. They did hug it out after the Heat/Celtics series.

Really, if we are going to amnesty miller.

West - Battier(or Hill) - Dalembert and resigning Chalmers and Jones(or Jamario Moon or Marquis Daniels) would complete our team.

If we can't get Dalembert with the MLE, I say we go for West with the full MLE. Than sign Kwame Brown, James Jones, Shane Battier or Grant Hill, and Kurt Thomas to the vet min.

West/Chalmers/Cole
Wade/Hill or Battier/West
LeBron/Jones/Hill or Battier
Bosh/Haslem/Thomas
Brown/Anthony/Pittman/Thomas

This.

Stuckey can't shoot, but the guy is strong and only 25 years old. I've always thought he's capable of more than he's shown thus far in the league.

No way Stuckey comes to us for cheap. He is restricted so if he did, Detroit would just match.

Delonte is the best fit. If Lebron gives the OK (and they did hug at the end of the series last year) we should go after him.

I'd even split the MLE for him (If Dalembert say no as I suspect he will) or give him the bi-annual (assuming we amnesty Miller and can use it)

Why not bring back Tim Hardaway and Alonzo Mourning? Our 2 biggest needs solved in one fair swoop. :D

Yeah, we have the biannual, right? I would definitely take a chance on Delonte. Loved his role on the Cavs and he seems like the tough, 3pt shooting do-it-all kind of PG we need running the floor with Bron and Dwade.

Thing about Delonte is, even if Lebron and him are cool--he still may not be worth the risk. There's a lot of behind the scenes **** with him that can wear a team down. And I don't know that he could stand up to the intense media scrutiny that comes with this team. He basically didn't start his whole last season with the Cavs despite being the best player at his position, because he was a basketcase and couldn't be relied on.

IMO he's just not worth the distraction. Allen Iverson would be less of a distraction, that's how bad it is.
