MEM - CHI - MIN

Post#1 » by shrink » Sun Dec 4, 2011 4:16 pm

I saw a MEM poster sneer at this offer for Mayo. I'd take it:

ShanWow wrote: All I know is that Memphis won't sell him low, so many Bulls fans were dreaming that they would get Mayo for Korver, Brewer, Asik and a 1st  .

Well, I think he meant Korver OR Brewer. Maybe I've swallowed the hype on Asik, but I don't think that's a bad offer. If we don't spend our cap space elsewhere, how about something like this:

MIN GETS: Omer Asik + Ronnie Brewer + CHI 1st
MIN GIVES: MEM 1st (lottery protected) + $5.4 mil cap space + Wayne Ellington

CHI GIVES: Omer Asik + Ronnie Brewer + CHI 1st
CHI GETS: OJ Mayo

MEM GIVES: OJ Mayo
MEM GETS: MEM 1st (lottery protected) + $4.4 mil cap space + Wayne Ellington

MEM gets exactly what they need. Cap space to stay under the lux and sign Marc Gasol to whatever big deal they have to match, and their pick back. I like returning the pick for them, because they not only could use it, but it gives them flexibility from the Stepien Rule if they need to trade a future 1st later in the season for an unforeseen need.

Is this a good enough package for our cap space + pick, or would it just create more roster crowding with B-ranked players?

I would say Memphis cuts out Minnesota and takes Asik.

I do like Asik, I also like adding Brewer's d. It's a no brainer for me as Asik is a real nice defensive center already and he's stilll pretty raw, and we're basically giving up nothing.

Bulls decline. They'll just hold onto their key defensive backups & pick and go after a SG in FA. It might not be OJ Mayo level of talent but it will be somebody solid.

See, I thought that was a decent offer from the Bulls as well! I assume shanwow, the MEM fan, has seen this deal many times from CHI posters, and while there is talent there, it doesn't fit MEM's needs. I think I'd slide in, to help two of our weakest spots.

One of the biggest problems I see though is that we need to consolidate some talent, and I hoped our cap space would help us do that. Still, the value seems to be there, imo, though I don't follow the Bulls very closely.

Yeah, that's a great deal for Memphis. That guy doesn't know what he's talking about. The Bulls would never offer that deal.

OJ Mayo is one of the best defenders in the league, hes a two way player and hes a great passer and playmaker.

1: If Memphis wouldn't take that package for Mayo, why would they take a worse package from us?

2: That guy was just being a homer. That trade from Chicago is much better than the proposed trade that Memphis actually took from Indiana.

Memphis would want more "right now" talent out of a deal. Mayo played well for them in the playoffs last year. They plan on getting as far or further this year. Do you think Ellington = Mayo? I don't, and I am very anti-Mayo.

Also, I think Chicago can't afford to give up Asik without getting a center back in return. The injuries last year to Boozer and Noah made it clear they need someone like Asik ready to play real minutes if somebody gets hurt.

This is horrible for Memphis. Ellington is negative value, who wouldn't even be in the NBA, if Kahn hasn't stupidly extended him.

The only reasoning I could come up with for the MEM poster's disdain was that MEM's #1 priority is finding the money to keep Marc Gasol. The cap space does this, and the MEM pick provides more value that doesn't add cap space. I added Ellington, not because he's a great, but because he's cheap, and they still need to fill their roster once they have used up $45 mil of their salary cap on three players (Gasol, ZBo and Gay).

I disagree. He sucks but he does have some skill. Good shooters will always find a way to stay in the league.
A lot of teams would give him 10 minutes or so per game and make him shoot corner 3's...

Ellington isn't terrible defensively either. He's a standard young, cheap, 3 point shooter off the bench with high character. He's a good guy to have on a playoff team in case of injury or fouls.

So we trade 5.4 mil in cap space for asik+brewer and a downgrade from a memphis 1st to chicago 1st?

I just don't see the appeal of ronnie brewer.

Memphis was ready to deal Mayo for cap + a 1st + a cheap big at the deadline last winter.
All we are lacking is the cheap big. Memphis already has a defensive 2 in tony allen, and they are comfortable giving mayo's minutes to xavier henry and sam young. What they really need is a decent backup C or PG. Find that in a 3-teamer and send memphis's pick back to them and mayo to us.

Min trades:
Mem 1st, wayne ellington, rights to loukas mavrofekalis
Min receives:
OJ Mayo, Ranaldo Balkman (waived)

Mem Trades:
OJ Mayo
Receives:
Ronny Turiaf
wayne ellington
Mem 2013 1st, rights to jerome jordan

Nyk trades:
balkman, turiaf, rights to jerome jordan
receives:
capspace, rights to loukas mavrofekalis

min gets mayo
NYK gets balkman off their 2012 cap to make a run at cp3/d12
memphis gets a 1st, bench shooter, backup PF/C, and rights to jerome jordan.

we might have to amnesty miller/webster/pek to make it work. We can't send ellington or hayward to NY as salary filler expirings since kahn picked up their 2012 options therefore making them undesirable to a team hoarding 2012 cap, even as small as their salaries will be. We could send miller to NY, but he has 848k of 2012 dead money if he is waived.
