JUSTIN EDWARDS

Post#222 » by JN » Thu Dec 1, 2011 3:58 pm

It seems that he chose Maine as he was guaranteed playing time in the first year -- a guarantee he could not get at other higher profile schools that recruited him such as Marquette, Missouri and George Washington.

Through 4 games he is scoring 22.0 PPG on 60% shooting. So its not just a matter of chucking against lesser competition.

A-East fans have said he is very athletic, and it his demonstrated in his statline where at 6-3, he is averaging 3.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.

So I think what bears monitoring, especially if he keeps this pace, is will he tranfer to a top program at the end of the year? Would he be willing to sit out 2012/2013?

Based on how he has performed as a freshmen, and the fact that he was on some bid schools radar before the season started, I would imagine many top schools have him on the transfer radar.

im starting to think wiljter really blew it with his decision to go to UK. If he was just sitting because they had good veterans thatd be one thing, but hes not getting any time due to other freshmen/sophmores and because the coach doesnt think his style of game helps most times. isnt that something that should have come up in recruitment? "hey kyle, i think youre a stud. but im only going to play you in games that i think are custom made to your skills". he coudl be getting heavy minutes at many very good programs. say michigan or xavier or texas or ucla or anywhere else. really just dont understand that decision.

I was actually just debating this with a friend earlier today. I used the Texas example (since I'm a fan). Texas is struggling mightily this season because they lack any inside scoring presence. I'm not saying Wiltjer is a inside presence, but he is a big body who can play the 4 or 5, depending on the match-up. He would be starting for Texas, or just about any other program, sans the top 10. Going into this season I was about as high on Wiltjer, as I was on any other Canadian freshman. Kentucky had one of the best recruiting classes IN THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE BASKETBALL. Anthony Davis, Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Wiltjer...all were Top 30 ranked freshmen.

It goes without saying that Wiltjer will have to stay additional years at UK, whereas if he had gone to another program, he'd be a one and done candidate. I do suspect Davis, Jones, Kidd-Gilchrist, and Lamb will all declare this year. That being said, it's not as though top prospects aren't coming right back in the next year. The big question is, where will Wiltjer end but next season? UK has three, rumoured to soon be four, five-star recruits in their 2012 recruiting class.

Wilter will live to regret his choice of UK, but I guess that's what makes John Calipari the best recruiter in all the NCAA.

Prospects ranked 10-30 in the class are not nearly as strong one and done possibilities as you seem to be suggesting. He is a great recruit, but not in that special class either like a Davis or Gilchrist.

For the sake of comparison, Rak Christmas and Michael Carter-Williams are struggling to get any playing time with Syracuse were on the same level as recruits as Wiltjer.

Fair enough on talent, but I think Wiltjer is also just the wrong kind of horse for Kentucky. Teague has been awful but he's still playing as he keeps pace.

UCLA would've been a good call, or Duke (sorry).

That up/under move yesterday against UNC was more than old-school. It was archaic. I think it once banged Roy Williams' mom after a hayride. I'm a fan.

Khem Birch is filling up the stat sheet in his minutes.

In 15.5 MPG
4.6 PPG
55% FG
5.4 RPG
2.1 BPG

Seems like he could be a 10 rebound, 3 block type performer in starter's minutes
