Don't have a clue where the NBA salary cap numbers were back then but if we had given Johnson what Atlanta was offering (70 mil over 5 years) in July '05. And, given Amare that (73 mil over 5 years) contract in October '05. Something like 52? 54? million of the Suns payroll/cap room would have been used up by 4 players. Nash(65 mil/5yrs), Marion(80 mil/6 years) then Johnson and Stoudemire.
Maybe it would have worked out...having those 4 with bigtime contracts on the same team. Though having no Amare and Diaw in '05-'06 wouldn't have been fun at all...probably ugly.
I've never been a huge fan of J. Johnson. Very good player, that has been enormously overrated & overpaid for many years now.
I'd let Johnson walk again as far as that aspect from the summer of '05.
forward...

I would have dumped Marion and kept Iggy on his rookie deal.
Nash, Johnson, Iguodala, Stoudemire and Kurt Thomas would have owned the League.

Im not saying pay JJ what atl did, my idea is that the suns offer what he was asking back then in 04 season of 50 mil for 5-6 yrs.
Agree nevetsov. I think we could have traded Marion and landed a big man or two players due to the size of marions contract.

needs to hire some front office people who get after it and make some noise with ideas and new players....that is the bottom line..plus use the draft to make it happen...we should get free agents due to our location...come on suns..don't lose your fan base...jb

People are making it all a lot more complicated than it really is. It's simple as keep Johnson and don't do anything stupid like trading Kurt Thomas

We pretty much extended/ traded the wrong guys too.
Didn't extend JJ
This hurt, so we overcompensated by extending Diaw too early
Traded KT because he was too expensive
Didn't trade Diaw/ Marion even though they were the real cap killers
Traded young picks to save cash in the short term
Spent that money on long term problems like Marcus banks
