OT The Music/Bands you listen to thread

Post#1 » by Basti » Mon Dec 5, 2011 11:33 am

Hi guys,

I was just reading this old thread I made about music/bands we like to listen to when I thought it would be nice to have some convos about music again. I could have bumped the old one but it's better to start a new thread. This is the link to the old thread.

For me personally, I find it quite interesting to see how much my taste in music has changed over the years. The genres I like to listen to are pretty much the same but the artists have changed a bit. I've gotten into some fine classic music over the last year and listen to less of the new stuff. I rarely listen to the radio these days, much less do I watch music on TV. It's just crap that's aired there.

Bands/artists that I started to listen heavily to in the past years
Pixies (might be my new favorite band overall)
The Replacements (Minneapolis represent 8-) )
The Dismemberment Plan
Joy Division
Sick Of It All
Turbonegro
Springsteen (not too many songs that I really like but I think Dancing In The Dark and Rosalita are way up in my top 50 list of songs, the former being in the top 10)

etc.

Let's get going.

I prefer rap/hip hop. I grew up on it when it was all my brother listened to. My parents also listened to a lot of country, and I also grew up on that.

My ipod is full of 90's music mostly. 90's country, lots of 2pac. I got quite a bit of music from performers on you tube like Wax and dumfoundead.

I also like Styx, AC DC, Tom Petty, Bob Seger and many more classic rock tunes.

Basically anything except metal.

I'm a musician so I like to listen to music that seems like it would be the most fun to play.

In the past few years, I've gotten into pop-punk. I listen to a lot of Radio, Mayday Parade, All Time Low, Every Avenue, The Maine.

I've been listening to a lot of post-hardcore/metal bands recently, like Blessthefall, Of Mice and Men, The Word Alive, Miss May I, Make Me Famous, Bring Me the Horizon.

There's also this post-hardcore band I like a lot called Woe, is Me. I started listening to them because they had most aspects about the post-hardcore genre that I love, but they had an R&B lead singer, which I thought was awesome since I'd never heard anything like that before. The lead singer left the band and they brought this new guy in. Not as good talent-wise, but he's got a better "rock" voice for that band.

A couple of bands you should check out are Weaver at the Loom, Camera Can't Lie, and Take Cover. They're all local and they're pretty nice guys.

No, I'm not a 16-year-old girl.

Ok, I'm game. Musician here, too.

Most of what I like isn't on the radio. Some pop stuff is guilty pleasure type stuff though (for example Yelawolf's new record is just plain fun).

60's big band (Thad Jones, Count Basie, Mingus, Gillespie)
jazz and blues (Howling Wolf, BB King, Muddy Waters)
early funk (Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes)
rock (Guided by Voices, Replacements, Pixies)
country (Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earl)
rap (Roots Manuva, Del the Funky Homosapien)
classical even (Debussy, Ravel)

I play some music around town. Mostly college radio-type bar scene.

I mostly only listen hip-hop/rap but I pretty much will listen to anything besides Country music. J Rocka pretty much listed all my favorite rappers/rap groups. I listen to mostly older hip-hop (90's) but I listen to some other current rappers too (Curren$y, Kendrick Lamar, Dom Kennedy, Nipsey Hussle, etc). I'm a big Wu-Tang fan, I see their tour is coming to Minneapolis in January I'm going to try to get some friends to go.

It's so funny to me how every generation has their stuff that they swear by, that most others consider to be crap.

I used to be that rock-radio nu-meal screamo emo punk thrash hardcore guy, but all of the new bands that play basically the same crap I loved in high-school I think are just the epitome of suck now:

Limp Bizkit - Hollywood Undead
Atreyu/Bleeding Through/etc. - Black Veil Brides
Old A7X - New A7X

Nowadays I try to keep a huge variety, but anything that sounds cliche or a complete rehash of something before it I avoid.

I'm really into inde/folk and rock stuff currently, but always tend to sneak a guilty pleasure in somewhere. I'm also a huge fan of good singers....If Josh Krajcik doesn't win the X-factor I'll be pretty annoyed.

amen!! Euro badass.

I tend to have a softpost for old grunge. I remember watching the first showing of Smells like Teen Spirt on MTV, I was 6. Hair metal makes me vomit. Bon Jovi offends me, the Crue is a stain on society and Nickleback isn't fit preform on this continent or the EurAsian landmass nor Australia.

Tom Waits and Dido are gold standards that can never go away, currently my go-tos are the Decemberists and Death Cab. Florence Welch is very dreamy.

Basti, you listen to Hüsker Dü, don't you?

I've tried to get into them on youtube but so far I got mixed results. There are some songs that I really like (Something I learned today, for example) but others are kinda bland to me (Green Eyes). I definitely prefer The Replacements as the most famous Minneapolis based rock band.

But I'll try getting into Hüsker Dü again. So far I've mostly had them playing as background music while browsing the Internet.

I only have two albums (Yours Truly and Blood, Sweat & No Tears) and I really like them both. The former one is from 2000 or 2001 while the latter is from 1989 or something. Blood, Sweat & No Tears is more rough and oldschool than Yours Truly, which has two somewhat melodic and kinda non-hardcore-like songs. One of these songs (Hello Pricks) is my personal Sick Of It All favorite.

Yeah, that's funny to me, too. Although I don't want to do the same as everyone, I kinda think the same of the new stuff that's being played on radio. Then again, I'm mostly referring to the mainstream music which most likely has always been really crappy.

I like a lot of different genres, including classical. About the only things I can't listen to are hip-hop and most of the newer country. Mostly listen to classic rock, blues rock, alternative, alt. country, folk, singer-songwriter stuff. Yep, that narrows it down. :D

Some bands/musiians I've been listening to a lot lately:
The Decemberists
Imelda May
The Jayhawks
Seasick Steve
