MIN GETS: $4.75 mil TPE (cap space) + $3 mil cash

WHY FOR MIN? Since they are under the cap, MIN could renounce the TPE and turn Miller's $4.75 mil into cap space while they save their amnesty clause (they could use it on Webster if they really needed more cap room). They have a full roster and plenty of youth already, so they sell that pick for $3 mil plus the 20% of Miller's contract that insurance doesn't cover (about $1 mil) .. and the $4.75 mil of valuable cap space now.

WHY FOR LAL? They may feel they need to find a 1st right now, to sweeten a Bynum offer to ORL. Lux penalties don't apply to the end of the season, but they should easily be able to dispose of Miller's deal later in the season to an owner with cap space or TPE seeking to save money. LAL could send out Miller's deal and $2 mil in cash .. it would net the other team about $1 mil, and it would save the Lakers about $4 mil ($1 mil salary + $4.75 lux - $2 mil cash).

Since I had to look up the protections on the UTA pick, I figured I'd transfer the info:

UTA protected 1st:
2012: Top 14 protected
2013: Top 12 protected
If not conveyed by 2014 and if UTA 2014 1st rd pick is not within top 9 picks, MIN will have the option to swap 2014 1st rd pick with UTA. If MIN does not receive a first round pick by the 2013 draft and also does not swap 2014 first round picks with UTA, then MIN will receive UTA’s own 2014 second round pick

I like that yours removes the risk. Mine simply gets cap space, that we hope we can use later. I still believe that cap space will have value.

I note that in the amnesty draft, any player that no one bids on becomes a UFA. Why should anybody receive no bid? Put a vet-min level offer on everyone! It's hard to think any of them wouldn't have trade value with a vet-min price tag, and even if you couldn't sell them, they'd probably pay you extra to buy them out! LOL!

Docking Schedule on the Trade board pointed out in the new CBA:

The cash a team pays or receives in trade is limited to $3 million annually.

This means that LAL couldn't pay to get rid of Miller, and LAL is the last place he should be. Insurance would pay 80% of his salary, but 0% of the lux taxes he'd add.

I still like Narf's idea to use the insured contract as an asset, if Mr. Taylor is willing to take on the money.

I hate trading picks for cash, and cap space really isn't very useful for us at this point. No impact FAs are coming here without being grossly overpaid. If anything we should be looking to gain draft picks, especially so considering the Clippers fiasco.

I think you're undersestimating the usefulness of having Brad Miller in practices helping people understand what Adelman wants, especially from the centers.

If a trade between the Hornets/Magic and the Lakers is inevitable, just accept the role as kingmaker if you can take advantage of the situation.

I doubt Miller actually steps on the court, but I want him around to help Love and Randolph learn the system a little quicker.

Maybe, but there has to be other centers out there who've played for Adelman and can be assistant coaches, but don't cost us $4.75 mil in cap space.
