But it can only be used on previous CBA contracts, right?
I think it's best to cut somebody before the season starts.

Re: Puke Walton....
like the article mentioned, the severe luxury tax penalties (with this new CBA) don't kick in this season, so the lakers probably think they can bite the bullet so they can try continue to try to work on a trade that will require walton's salary. i also wouldn't write off that they might even want to see where MWP is at by the end of the season, cause if he's declining even further, using the amnesty on him looks like a much better idea than a 5mil expiring walton.

Re: Puke Walton....
Yeah, pretty much. Might as well hang onto it until the taxes become more severe and I have a good hunch that Metta is only getting slower and more or less useless.

I think Metta, on his worst day, is better than Walton on his best day. As long as Kobe is on this team, I don't see Peace slipping up.

+1
I don't think you'll see too many expiring contracts getting Amnestied, but maybe... An hell, if Luke can still shoot outside jumpers at all, he's probably better than half our team... At this point, it makes more since to give him a chance to prove he can play rather than wasting a once in 7-8yr amnesty provision on him...
Based on what I've seen from Metta, I'm driving the 'Amnesty $21M Metta' bandwagon... I really hope he proves me wrong.
Blake at $4M for three years would be my next candidate... But he might actually flourish in our new system so who knows.
Honestly, I'm not expecting the Amnesty clause to be used this season unless we got an expensive superstar like Dwight or CP3 and really needed the cap help before the new tax criteria come into effect.

But Metta isn't so much better than Luke to justify his $7M a season for 3 more seasons... And you wouldn't waste an Amnesty on a cheaper player that expires after next season.
Luke isn't better than Metta, but using the Amnesty clause on him doesn't make a lot of sense at this point.

Re: Puke Walton....
I'm just looking at it as a dollar per contribution basis. Walton doesn't offer much more than a team glue guy or sideline coach. I just don't think his contributions are worth $11 million over the next two years.
Peace is most likely the starting SF and he has a player option after this season. I wouldn't rule out his crazy ass leaving if the Lakers win a ring or have another early exit.
^ It's a gamble for sure and I definitely understand getting rid of Peace over Walton.

Re: Puke Walton....
itd be easier to simply waive luke walton and spread his remaining salary over the next 5 years.
2.2mil per year for 5 years is palatable than 5.5 over 2 years.
then take the amnesty and use it on world peace
OR
dont do it at all.
the punitive lux tax system doesnt kick in until 2013/14, by which luke wont be on the books.
