If you are those two teams and your out of the Paul hunt it doesn't change your situation. Boston still faces the reality of having a great table setter with a future that lacks the finishers and GS still has two shoot first defensively challenged guards with a scoring PF who is also defensively challenged and some cap flexibility.

If GS can bring in Chandler and Rondo they can upgrade defensively and achieve a more balanced offense.

Curry in Boston gives Boston the most explosive perimeter in the game with Curry, Allen, and Pierce.

You think this team with Curry is better than this team with Rondo?

It's kinda funny, because I got a hard time for saying they should trade Rondo for Curry about a year and a half ago on this board.

He sorta plateaued last year, but he was also playing hurt most of the year. I think he still has upside, though... one thing not mentioned is that he has nowhere near Rondo's handle or quicks. I think he is equal in BBIQ and nearly as good a passer.

Should also be noted that this deal does not eat that much into our potential cap room next year. Rondo + one cap hold = $11.5m, Curry + Biedrins = $13m.

I actually don't see why gsw would do this. Even with chandler, that's likely a 47 win team and would mean a one year cp3 rental. Biedrins is an issue for them contract-wise, but I don't think they'd part with their best asset. Maybe I am underrating how good they'd be?

I dislike this trade very much. I would trade Rondo for CP3 and Deron Williams. I'd consider trading him for Westbrook. But I wouldn't trade him for anybody else. Steph Curry is good, he's young, he can shoot, but I doubt he would put up big numbers in Boston where he would be the 4th option. If Jeff Green felt the blow of coming into this team for a bench role, imagine how Curry would feel coming in here to start in the main position of our team. No thanks..if you do this you might aswell deal the big 3 for other young pieces and just start **** over on the spot..

Yeah the more I read about this the less likely it seems. I guess I am not big on the "My Fathers best friends uncles works for the celtics." type source.

Ainge is only trading Rondo for players named Chris Paul, Deron Williams or Russell Westbrook....anyone else won't happen.

I saw him at lunch today and had so many questions for him, and he was as clueless as me. He just said that was all he got from his dad, who knew of us targeting Johnson in the draft, trading for Green last year, and inquiring about Roy Hibbert. Yes, Roy Hibbert was the main piece we were after for Rondo.

I assume there would be a lot more moving parts to this, and you're all possibly right about Paul coming here and Curry going to New Orleans. That could happen. Teams throw out false rumors all the time, and they even do this around their own people.

But I'm a firm believer in where there's smoke, there's fire. I think we're primed for one of the most interesting and condensed free agent periods ever. Dwight could end up here, CP3 could end up here, heck even Deron Williams may end up a Celtic. It's superstar trading season, exactly the thing the new CBA aims to ratify.

Rondo2Hondo wrote:I don't want to out my friend, but his dad has been very close to the Celtics for years. With that being said, I have heard of a few transactions before they happened in the past through him, but nothing big like this.

I'm dubious to whether it's true or something that has just been bandied around. When Danny acquired Ray and KG, I don't think any of us knew what was going on. I was quite certain we were trading for Rashard Lewis to pair with Paul. I'm glad that we didn't, haha.

Anyway, back to the supposed deal. I agree, it doesn't make sense financially. If we were getting Udoh or Wright in the deal, I could accept it as a lifelong Celtic fan, but as it stands without seeing or knowing the extra moving parts, I'm in with the majority, no thanks!

I like Curry, but I would like him to be paired with a slashing shooting guard with shut down D, and we're not getting one of those for cheap (I miss Tony Allen).

I do not think trading for Chris Paul is the best option. He has regressed after the injury and doesn't want to be here. We should try and swing some sort of deal for Felton and Oden. I like the idea of really swinging for the fence. Ship out Rondo and JO for those two, and pray that Oden recovers. His effect on a game is huge, and he is due to have a healthy season. Felton gives us some offense at the point, and he's a decent defender and good facilitator. That's the kind of move we need. And if that backfires, we don't re-sign Oden, and we have Felton on a shorter contract than Rondo.

It seems more likely that this was either a scenario that had been presented, with no intention of going through with it or the pieces were mixed up and it was Biedrins/Curry going to NO and Paul coming here.

I doubt Boston was in love with Klay Thompson that much, but maybe they had additional package pieces coming in this - Thompson/Udoh - something in addition to Curry that would constitute a package they could use to go after someone.

There's no logic behind a Biedrins/Curry acquisition alone, so it won't happen. It hurts the cap and doesn't improve the team's talent base for contending this year or in the future. Curry is fantastic talent, but even as an elite scoring PG, he has limitations that make a move for him tenuous when compared to having Rondo.

Loves your takes, but disagree a bit here. To the extent this has any merit, I think it was just off-kilter enough to be plausible. Surely there are many other offers being thrown around, but hear me out here.

When I first saw that, I was like, why do we eat the Biedrins deal, and why do we prefer Curry to Paul? Or Rondo, for that matter?

But upon further review of the financial impact, there is almost none.

This season:
Rondo $10m + some comparable backup C $3m vs Curry $3.1m + Biedrins $9m

Next season, for cap room purposes:
Rondo $11m + $500k cap hold or $3m comparable backup C vs $4m for Curry + $9m for Biedrins

2013-14:
Rondo $12m + $3m comparable backup C vs Curry ~$11m + Biedrins $9m expiring contract (or $0 if he opts out).

Can also play this out vs paying Chris Paul $20m a year, and it at least makes some sort of sense, depending on how they view Rondo vs Curry. So it doesn't add to payroll, and it doesn't really impact their cap room next year or their strategy going forward.

Overall, you can definitely construct a line of thought that works:

1. Rondo unliked by teammates, don't want to build around him or his lack of shooting.

2. Curry's upside, cheaper contract and greater ability to keep him in Boston than Paul.

3. Biedrins contract a nonfactor, need a backup C.

4. Paul's cost, health and flight risk.

5. Value of saving $10m a year to spend in other areas long-term.

I could see it.

I don't whose stats you are looking at but they are not Stephen Curry's. Try 49%/44%/93% at 18/4/6 per game.

There's a chance they look at him as a younger Steve Nash with those offensive efficiency numbers, but if they're taking back Biedrins there has to be more value added to the proposition - especially if GSW was going to get Chris Paul.

Teams are willing to give up multiple assets for Chris Paul - Biedrins, who I like in some ways, still doesn't count as an asset with that contract of his. Boston would have to be getting Udoh and/or Thompson with one or the other going to NO.

That's a lot of speculation on Curry's future ability - unless you totally value Curry's low-cost to production value over the next 2 seasons you have control over him....that's something to consider.

A Curry-Rivers backcourt next season might be a little redundant. :D

First of all, Curry is not close to a passer as Rondo. Rondo is almost up there with Nash. Curry is a small SG and all he can do is shoot. Not that good of handles, terrible defense. Then we take Beans who has negative value and most likely will be amnesty? Come on, we should be getting CP3 in the deal

Curry can play PG with us. We can let Pierce, Ray and KG do the set up on the offense - and not just Curry. Rondo fans are locked into the mindset that you need some uber PG to run your offense. You do not. The Lakers win with D. Fisher. The C's won Pierce running the show..

The real downside is that I dunno the Bierdins is really any good... Danny could see it as a way to get a big for a small though and not get locked into a team structure that has your PG as your max salary player which I think is really a problem in this league. You want your max salaries at the C, PF, and SF or big SG spots.. PG's in general are too small (outside of magic)..

When you break down these numbers it does paint a better picture for this - provided that Curry is a highly valued commodity for things going forward. I know he is extremely well-regarded around the league, so it plausible.

That gives Boston next year's free agent market, which is ho-hum if the 3 marqee guys are locked up. However, here's a thought for you - Daron Williams playing alongside Curry in the backcourt. If Howard/Paul go other places Williams may very likely walk. NY would appear to be a better fit for him, but Boston could offer more money and still do the "re-up the vets" maneuver.

Before I get side-tracked into stupid nonsense, focusing just on this deal, The money becomes prohibitive in year 3, which very well may be a year Boston is looking to cash in on the free agent market as well. With Curry being extended and Biedrins on the last year of his deal, the team would have to look at amnesty for Pierce or hope for some amnesty rule allowing for amnesty on traded players (doubtful IMO).

It does provide a window of opportunity - provided Curry is a hot commodity....it's...interesting, to say the least...something to chew on more than the initial reaction.

I have a differetn take on this Bill.

If this is the trade and we get Curry, it means that we aren't in the running for Paul or Howard. We know that our organization knows the value of stars to win a chip. If we are getting Curry it means we are going to try and get a star through the draft and Curry is a more viable long term option as he is still on a cheap contract and it becaomes about saving money until you have to spend it.

The formula is trade for a star or get low draft picks and get a star that way, That is the only road to take.

I'm not completely against Curry but the defensive drop off would be noticeable and with KG & Ray unable to create shots by themselves at this point the C's would have to hope that Curry's PG skills are better than the numbers suggest...which may be possible.

At the very least, this topic gives me hope that Danny will pull a huge trade that keeps us out of mediocrity. Still don't think that Curry is a good return on Rondo though.

A few other thoughts...

* Biedrins for Josh Smith has always been floated around, usually with a pick attached to Andris.

* Kid does not like basketball, and has openly talked about retiring at the age of 30, or the end of this contract. He could honestly opt-out in Year 3 and just head back to Europe, especially if he can get any sort of money there to recoup the $9m he'd be giving up.

* Straight-up cap room is sorta overrated. I don't see the big fish forcing their way to Boston, and cap room usually equates to overpaying people. The big thing is flexibility, and we would retain that IMO.

* Have never bought into the Rondo trade rumors too much. Always seemed like they were just trying to push his buttons or drive his market value down, and given the fact that he is their best trade asset right now, surely they want to see what his value is. But this is starting to feel a little different. Too much talk about him wearing out his welcome, and let's face it, there would be some bad blood if he stayed at this point.

* I don't agree with those who think he has this top-flight trade value, to land a Westbrook type. Only reason we are in the game on Paul is that New Orleans is over a rock right now.

This is untrue - Curry has legit PG skills. No, he's not Rondo, the best passing PG in the NBA. But he's a better passer than Russell Westbrook to be sure and he can handle and set up the drive-and-dish with lane penetration. He's the real deal offensively, i've watched him extensively since his entry into the league and I have no problems with his ability to run the point.
