Jays in on Gio Gonzalez

Post#1 » by turner10 » Wed Dec 7, 2011 11:46 pm

article from Susan Slusser (covers the A's)

http://blog.sfgate.com/athletics/2011/12/07/toronto-jumps-into-gio-gonzalez-talks-with-as/

I’ve heard from two sources that the Blue Jays are after A’s All-Star Gio Gonzalez, and that is an interesting development: Toronto frequently deals with the A’s, and the Blue Jays are stocked in the minors, especially after the Roy Halladay deal.

I ran a list of the Blue Jays’ top-rated prospects by one source – Oakland wants at least two of a team’s top four prospects for Gonzalez, plus some middle-level minor-leaguers – and I was told that Toronto has even better players in the lower minors that might be Oakland targets. The A’s aren’t looking for immediate help in any deal this winter, they’re looking for top talent that would be ready for a potential new stadium in three years. That could include players who are in the lower levels of the minors, now.

I think the other 11 teams I’m told are in the Gonzalez hunt will be nervous about Toronto’s interest. The Blue Jays have the wherewithal to make something happen because of their minor-league depth.

not really interested in giving up valuable prospects for Gio

As per @SusanSlusser, Jays could be in on Gio Gonzalez trade. Told three-team deal possible.

I could see one of Thames/Snider + Cooper + a pitching prospect. No way we go with two pitching prospects.

If the cost is someone equivalent to a Domonic Brown or Tyler Skaggs + others...there's no way in hell I'd want any part of that deal

We're talking quite a bit more than that, if Oakland isn't blowing smoke on their demands. Something like Hutchison/Deck + Marisnick/Gose + another prospect or two.

Then I say pass. A's already overplayed their hand on Bailey and if that is what they expect for Gonzalez too then forget it. That's more than the Phillies paid for Halladay. I can see the Sox ending up with both Gonzalez and Bailey in return for emptying out their farm system.

Don't think Gio is worth the price. If the A's are rebuilding, I'd rather target Brandon McCarthy.

AA is a value-fiend; unless the A's asking price is bunk I dont see this materializing.

Also...now that this is a "media rumor"; highly unlikely it actually happens.

Marisnick isn't someone you just toss in as an afterthought. He'd be the best prospect in that deal. I'm not even sure I'd give up the first three alone for Gonzalez, but it would be close.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:

...

Where the hell did I say he's an afterthought?

Just cause I listed him last?

I certainly hope not. That doesn't make any sense. We have a number of internal options who could probably replicate his very mediocre numbers next year.

Well, yeah.

It's like saying Escobar was traded for Tim Collins and Alex Gonzalez.

If it is rumored, it won't happen.

Not with a walk rate above 4.00 in the AL West he can't.

Niese has very good peripherals. Better than Gio's actually.

Niese's peripherals were great. He just got hit around. Has an excellent groundball rate and was tacking on velocity...and a lot cheaper than Gio.

Couldn't blackmail me into considering that. Gio's a pretty good pitcher, but he's hardly stellar...I wouldn't go near a deal like that, though if there are a half-dozen or more teams after him, it could take quite a bit (though I doubt quite that much).
