Re: Jays in on Gio Gonzalez
Kind of a newbie question but I've never figured out what peripherals are and how are they useful. Also, how is it measured?

Peripherals are stats like Ground Ball% K/9 BB/9 K/BB HR/FB% and hey you may as well lump SERA FIP and xFIP in there as well. If you want to get more advanced look at his Strike % Swinging Strike % Zone % and Contact % also batted ball profiles and pitches/AB can be use full. All of this info can be found if you scroll down a players fangraph page, http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?pl ... position=P

Putting his awful walk rate into the AL East scares the crap out of me.

Niese has very good peripherals. Better than Gio's actually.
The 1.4 WHIP and .280 BAA is a big red flag, though, and he hasn't shown any improvement year to year. I do think a healthy MgGowan could put up similar numbers.

Re: Jays in on Gio Gonzalez
I don't really feel comfortable giving up that much for Gio Gonzalez. He's a nice pitcher but he perennially struggles versus some good teams, he's also inconsistent even versus poor teams.
Check out his ERA versus some top offenses:
2011:@NYY - 4.2 IP - 6 ER, 3 BB
BOS - 6 IP - 4 ER, 1 BB
NYY - 6 ip - 4 ER, 4 BB
@TEX - 4 ip - 7 R, 3 ER, 3 BB
@ BOS 5.2 ip - 4 ER, 3 BB
Considering we play two of these teams often, and another nice offense in TB; I'm not interested in giving up 2 high end prospects and a bunch of mid level ones for him. Not to mention he gets hit around a lot and gives up a tonne of walks.. he's a wonderful strikeout pitcher, and he plays in a pitcher friendly ballpark that has been very friendly to lots of average pitchers in the past.

Couldn't blackmail me into considering that. Gio's a pretty good pitcher, but he's hardly stellar...I wouldn't go near a deal like that, though if there are a half-dozen or more teams after him, it could take quite a bit (though I doubt quite that much).
After I wrote my response and then saw you respond to this post.. I'm surprised you even took the time to address it.

Terrible home/road splits, can't throw stirkes, and ridiculous asking price from Oakland. Pass.

I really like Gonzalez and Cahill from Oakland. But unless they could be had for a steal, its better to move on.

Re: Jays in on Gio Gonzalez
My hope with Gio Gonzalez is that the Phillies who've been rumoured to be in on him, wind up getting him for a ton of prospects. Since he's cheap they get to control him for a few years and this frees them up to trade Cole Hamels who's due for a big contract.
At that point you hope the Jays can step into that action.

Re: Jays in on Gio Gonzalez
He's a good, solid pitcher that'll probably have an ERA around 4, and that's valuable, but not worth what it'd cost to get him.
