If you're gonna start the thread, please bring a link or a tweet quoted or something. Thanks for the head's up though, just saying it would've been great to click in and get directed to the evidence.

This is our guy IMO. I think we've been waiting for Darvish.

We may not like the system, but we really like not giving up a 1st round pick or any prospects for a bonafide #1/#2 starter in his mid 20's.

The other thing about Darvish is that we can argue around the "Jose Cap". It actually is a real issue with the team.

We don't really want to pay anyone more than the $14 million Jose is making because that kind of thing can wreck the team harmony. If Jose is our best player, he's the best paid and everyone knows it.

If we pay $50 million for Darvish and then sign him to a 5/$50 contract then he's only our 2nd highest paid player. The expectation is that he should be our 2nd or 3rd best player so we're not internally inconsistent.

If Rogers agrees to pay $100+ million to a pitcher that has never pitched in the Majors, I'd be very shocked. They would have to be convinced that Darvish will bring enough revenue back over time to make it worthwhile. But yes, Darvish seems like the type of player AA would target as his upside (according to some) is a front of the rotation starter and if they win the bid they won't be competing with anyone for his services. Just depends on the cost and how much AA/Beeston/Rogers are willing to pay.

Like you MB, I'd be shocked if the jays went after him. After listening to AA's parameters speeches of the last few days, I think incremental increases are possible but I doubt very much that we'll be in full steam ahead on this guy.

This doesn't make any sense at all.

I know we have been linked to him and all. But I have a hard time seeing us paying a guy (even with his potential) all this money, when he hasn't played a single game in the majors.

It does make sense.

Players take a look around the room and jealousies are in fact built up over salaries. The simple fact is that teams generally have a pecking order and salary goes into it. It happens in every sport and if you have major disparate salaries & performances it can and will cause disharmony in the locker room.

If we signed a guy like say Mark Burhle for $14 million per season right now. How is that going to effect extension negotiations with Brandon Morrow? Morrow is going to be gauging his performance to Burhle's and then he'll want similar money if he outperforms him. How is that going to sit with Rickey Romero knowing that he's the #3 paid player.

How about if we signed Ortiz for $15 million the season after Jose just signed an extension. Now if we signed Fielder to $20 million per season. How is that going to sit with Jose?

We're not paying him all that money. He'll probably be making 5-10/season. The posting money doesn't go to him, it' goes to Nippon-Ham.
