AA's offseason wish list

Post#1 » by MGD24 » Thu Dec 8, 2011 4:35 pm

As per Chisolms twitter here are a few interesting things;

gregorMLB Gregor Chisholm
Remaining offseason wish list for #BlueJays: front-to-mid rotation SP, middle of the order bat, middle relief (lefty and a righty).

gregorMLB Gregor Chisholm
AA on adding big bat: "I don't know how possible that would be and right now I don't see us being able to do that but things could change."

@gregorMLB Gregor Chisholm
Yes, it's on his wish list.Doesn't mean he'll do it but he's asking around RT @Eviola1: @gregorMLB AA actually said middle of the order bat?

AA on top SP: "I would love to... Easier said than done because I think every team in the game is going to look to do something like that."

Wonder if there really is no market for Carlos Beltran, whether we'd take a shot with him on a short term deal..

After the monstrous contract to pujols, fielder is out of the question. Darvish is probably the only FA worth looking into at this point. Rest of the holes will probably be filled via trade.

with his body breaking down - perfect for DH I'd think, and he'd probably come cheap which suits Rogers just fine.

Not only that, if there really is no market you can do a 1+ option or 2+ option.

If the Jays really aren't going to spend on a big bat to improve the offense (and who are we kidding...it's Rogers, they don't take on any risk...so they won't), it's time to consider Manny Ramirez once again. He had a .949 OPS and a .870 OPS in his last two seasons before the suspension. Give him a minimum contract to come DH and start platooning Lind with EE. You'll get above-average production out of those two spots on the cheap.

I'd really be open to anybody that allows Lind to be platooned, though. He cannot be allowed to flail away vs. lefties for another season.

Agreed. I just can't see them allowing Lind to get 500+ AB's behind Bautista. Lind had a .640 OPS against lefties last year.

Beltran's OPS has been >.900 for four of the last five seasons. 4.4 combined WAR last year, compared to Fielder's 5.2. Seven years older than Fielder, but no signs of decline at the plate.

I've signed the Fielder petition, but if it was my money, I'd rather give a reasonable contract to Beltran than a Pujols-esque deal to a player who's the same height as TJ Ford and the same weight as Diop (or Eddy Curry on a diet). Maybe a good placeholder for Votto in two years.

Anyway, all will await the outcome of the Darvish sweepstakes. For marketing reasons, Jays need to make a big splash at some point. And this could be it.

I wonder what it would take to get him 18/2? The WT piece claims he wants 8 figures and a multi-year deal. Not sure if that's overpaying; I didn't follow his production much last year.

Any chance Beltran could transition to 1st, at least part-time? Add Manny (DH) and Cespedes for LF/CF, re-sign KJ, and the Jazz offense is tremendous. Sign Darvish and trade for Niece, and the Jays are contending next year, with only one expensive signing. I know I'm dreaming here, but shouldn't moves like this be well within a conservative budget for the Jays?

Beltran's a nice option when he's healthy. In 2009 and 2010 he played in 140 games combined and just happened to stayrelatively healthy in his contract year? I don't know...

Chisholm has the full quotes up now if anyone's interested:

http://gregorchisholm.mlblogs.com/

Game plan moving forward…

“I think there are a lot of areas we could still address. You’d always love if you could add a bat to the middle of the lineup — that would be great. Realistically, I don’t know how possible that would be and right now I don’t see us being able to do that but things could change.

“I would love to add a mid to front rotation starter, again, that’s easier said than done because I think every team in the game is going to look to do something like that.

We definitely still need to solidify our bullpen. We’ve taken care of the ninth inning but we still need to take care of the eighth inning and continue to build that depth.”

Would you be okay with the status quo in the starting rotation…

“I guess I would be okay with it. The one thing is we have a lot of depth with young arms and young starters but they are young and there’s always an unknown there with how they’re going to react. But at the same time there’s value to getting those guys the innings and I think they all have the ability to click and do very well for us.”

Id be fine with it, they do need another arm but really they have a ton of guys that can step in and be 3/4 starters. Maybe Drabek figures it out Maybe Morrow puts it together, with the guys we have right now if AA can make a solid addition or two to the BP I think we can have the second best overall pitching in our division.
