Clippers match Golden State's offer sheet for DeAndre Jordan

Post#1 » by mkwest » Tue Dec 6, 2011 8:59 am

Clippers offer 5 years, $40M to keep RFA DeAndre Jordan, sources tell Y! Still, he's destined to sign offer sheet and force them to match.

Adrian Wojnarowski

Clippers position on DJ: Will make nice offer (ballpark 7/8 mill/per) but if he wants more he'll have to prove that market is there. 1

Clippers intend to match any offer sheet he signs elsewhere, unless it's redonkulous. There's a word for a 1 a.m. tweet 2

Ramona Shelburne

I would love for him to accept this amount, but he definitely has to see what else is out there.

$8M per with a starting salary between $6.89M and $7M.

12/13 = 7.4M
13/14 = 8M
14/15 = 8.6M
15/16 = 9.2M

I like it, but I expect him to sign an offer sheet with some other team, offering him around $10 mil per season over 4 years.

So we'll have to match that and live with him being a bit more pricey and only 4 years under contract.

5 years at 40mil seems fair to me, luv DJ, but i don't think the Clips need to pay him any more. Let's hope that other teams don't try & force the Clips to overpay.
DJ has to understand that in the new world of NBA Salary Cap the players are going to have to share (the cap money) if you want to be on a successful team

I guess I was hoping that we would pay him around $6.5 million per season. I guess I'm just cheap and I don't like it when players are over paid. But I do want to keep DJ and he's important to the team. I'm only in favor of getting rid of DJ is we are trading for Howard.

I believe DJ would have accepted this offer without testing waters if the new CBA talks hasn't been this ugly.
I'm sure he would like to stay, but his agents are going to force him to sign an offer sheet with another team. which could be up to 4/48 and that is going to screw our cap space.

I don't agree with offering anyone anything until the Paul and Dwight situations are handled but I guess. I suppose if we need more space cleared DJ can still be traded anyway. And that's a nice contract for a C if no one else offers more.

Bill Simmons had a decent summary of FA centres and realistic contract offers at Grantland yesterday. Also an intriguing suggestion for Kaman. Worth a look.

Its a nice proactive offer (for once!!) that tells DJ the Clips want him here.

He should test waters but won't get too much higher IMO anyway.

After most likely being used by Tyson Chandler and not landing him the Warriors will look at other options, which could include DeAndre Jordan.

And I could easily see them throwing something like 4 years and $50 mil at, after they offered that insane deal to Chandler.

The Warriors believe that they are all but out of the hunt for Tyson Chandler, according to sources.

The Knicks quickly emerged as the leading contender for Chandler on Thursday.

Golden State is expected to look elsewhere.

The Warriors could look to Nene, or Sam Amick reports that DeAndre Jordan would be in play.

The bidding to sign Clips' DeAndre Jordan to an offer sheet Friday likely to include G-State, Houston, New Orleans and Denver, sources say.

Like I've said, I could easily see some team offering Jordan a 4 year deal worth more then $10 mil a year.

Though, Houston could be out of the bidding if they're involved in that 3-team-deal with LAL and NOH for Pau Gasol.

Warriors are preparing to offer DJ an offer sheet starting at $10M today. This would essentially be a 4 year/$42.8M contract.

One thing that I'm unsure of is how the raises work with an offer sheet. We can offer 7.5% while other teams can only offer 4.5%. If we match, are we paying him a contract with 4.5% raises (i.e. the same contract)? Does he get 7.5% raises and thus make his contact $44.7M or does he get the 7.5% raises and starting salary of $9.6M?

No matter what, we've got to match that and I'm confident we will.

I'd also be pretty relieved if those numbers are true, cause he surely would be overpaid, but not by that much that it should be tough to match that contract.

I think we will match. I was concerned that it would be higher. It's about a million more than I would have hoped for, but it's not the end of the world. If he is given the offer sheet, I hope that we waste no time in matching and showing our guys that we're committed to them moving forward.

Yeah, pretty much.

Though, on the general board they're already talking about him being on the Warriors and how that front court will look like without even the slightest mentioning of him being a RFA and the Clippers maybe matching.

The GB should never be taken seriously lol. I know that it seems like a lot, but I strongly believe that he can become a double double guy with 2+ blocks a game. Only 2 players averaged that last season. Howard and Bogut. Other players were close (e.g. Bynum, Okafor, Noah, etc.) and are all making well over $10M/season. Would it be nice if he were more offensively inclined? Sure, but if he can give you 10 off of dunks, alley oops, put-backs, etc., then there's not much to complain about. All I care about is that he continues to grow and improve on the defensive end.

If someone offers anything better than 4 years $50M, man I don't know...

He's a great athlete, and is definitely a guy you want on your team from personality standpoint. I have liked DJ practically since he got here, but I have no illusions about him. He's never going to develop an offensive game, will likely never shoot over 50% from the FT line. He can get points in the same way Darius Miles did here, but he has no low post footwork/ skills.

I don't think he has quite the basketball smarts to be a truly dominant inside/defensive force. And if he's never going to have an offensive game, then what is that really worth? Another way of stating all this is that I think he will continue to get somewhat better, but not THAT much better- which is totally fine at the right price.

I really want to keep him. But there's a limit to how far anyone should (over)pay for him.

Rockets have missed out on Nene. So I'm hoping that we only have to match GSW's offer of DJ and that the Rockets don't try to get involved.
