We are bound to be a team that barely makes the playoffs while stuck in luxury tax with Sarver as our owner. Gotta love our luck

You can't amnesty if you are in the luxury tax

Say what? That's precisely what the amnesty is for...

Kerrsed wrote:The reason this scares me is now with Pietrus back, doesnt that put us into the Luxuary tax? Sarver has let it be known that he doesnt want to pay it, if we arnt a contender, which we really arnt.

I pray to god (which i dont believe in) that we dont end up doing what i think we will, which is give up a draft pick for someone to take on Pietrus, a'la Kurt Thomas. :(

I hope he has learned his lesson about what giving away players and picks will do to a franchise. pay the luxury tax, suck it up and move forward.

Bad luck though - as this would have been a good move to save dollars for a player who really won't have a role if Childress takes on more minutes.

I don't think Pietrus is worth the amesty. I think Warrick would be the first option. But he doesn't make much money

It would be like Sarver to use the amnesty on Pietrus to save a few million from the luxury tax only like selling draft picks for $3m.

Amnesty is to AVOID the luxury tax, not get out of it.

Then how did ORL amnesty Arenas? Pretty sure the amnesty was designed specifically to get teams out of financial burden.

Even with him we're not into lux tax territory I don't think, total payroll around $65m.

Alright my fault. I just looked it up you guys are right. Dunno what I was thinking.

But look on the bright side, Toronto may have called it off but I would be surprised if we can't find another team to take Pietrus off our hands sometime before the season starts.

It would probably only cost us a couple mill to buy him out (non-amnesty):

- About $4.5m left to be paid to him this season
- Signing with a new team would give him a vet min of around $2m
- He may accept a $2.5m buyout, take $2m from another team to choose a team and not lose money

The only thing is that we would not have the insurance of a $5m TPE up our sleeve to potentially use during the season.

We keep Hak as insurance for Markieff this season in case he isn't ready to be a full time backup.
By next season we will know what we hav with him and if he's good to go, we could then use the amnesty on Warrick to clear capspace for a big signing if needed.

I wouldn't say I'm freaking out. I am mad because I had an idea that the Suns actually did, and it falls through. :D It's all about me.

I also didn't like his agent trying to pump him up, only to find out that he is really a gimp. I also feel that if we are forced to keep him, Sarver will waive Brooks rights to save money or trade away a pick. Either way we will lose a pick over nothing. Either it is the first we got from ORL, or ours. Not a good choice.

By the way, I heard on NBAtv that teams not in the tax can bid on amnesty players. We aren't in the tax yet.

We're not even at the tax threshold yet. Including Pietrus, our payroll is a shade over $65m. We don't pay tax on Brooks's cap hold, it just bumps up our theoretical payroll to restrict us making moves.

I assume we used the $5m MLE between Brown and Telfair, which correct me if I'm wrong leaves us the Biannual exception only - which we may or may not be able to use to bid on amnestied players (still reading conflicting things on the bidding process).

Getting a TE for Pietrus would have given us the ability to slightly outbid other BAE bidders, but hey, no biggie.

not really a big deal. Some contending team will want him. Dallas maybe? WIth their big ass TPE, they could absob his contract. We should at least ask for a unconditinoal 2nd rounder back.

Didn't they use it on Odom? Or was it big enough to absorb them both? ($8.9+$5.3=$14.2m)

Barbs has 1-yr remaining? The idea is exciting just for the cartoon speed-demon aspect but do we want to take back a guy who wanted out? At $7 mil? If they take Warrick, sure.

So, you can only use the tax if you don't need to .....?

You can't bid on an amnestied player if you're in the tax, I believe.

+1 that someone else will want him if he knee gets the medical OK. NY would likely a 3-shooting, defensive wing and as DRK or Tastic said, Dallas, maybe - hell, they're buying everyone else
