Personally, I love Crawford. Always rooted for him and would love to see him come back and be a part of a winning Knicks team. I think he's a great offensive player and a good guy and would actually fit in quite nicely with this roster. Another veteran and a guy who can create his own shot which TD and Fields don't do so well. Fields more so than TD who is OK off the dribble.
I wonder if the Knicks are thinking well hey, we're not going to get the guy we really want at PG right now, so let's get some veterans in here who we can trust (Bibby and hopefully Davis) and some guys who may not be PGs, but are good passers (Crawford, Grant Hill). This team needs good passers, not necessarily just any point guard. Guys who can hit shots AND make plays for others. Jamal Crawford is a good play maker. Some of you are choosing not to remember the days he would impress us with his play making ability and have us wondering out loud if he should play the point for us.
Defensively, obviously Toney is superior. But I think Crawford can be okay if our TEAM defense improves and it will. He can fit in if everyone on the team buys in to a defensive mindset which seems to be the case already.
So while I like Douglas, I would actually make this trade because I think it makes us significantly better. Jamal is still a quality, proven player in this league and one who has always struggled to find himself on a decent roster until he went to Atlanta where he accomplished a lot. I think coming here and playing with such a star-studded team, back with D'Antoni who he liked playing for, he can absolutely flourish. I'm also willing to let Toney have a shot at the starting role, still excited to see what kind of season he has, but we all have to admit that he can't be in our future plans the way we'd like Fields and Shumpert to be. For a team who's biggest need is now a PG, he can't possibly be the long-term answer. Bring in a guy like Jamal and he's someone who will have more lasting power. Can play both guard positions and can either come off the bench or start without having to question where he fits, no matter how quickly Fields and Shumpert improve.
With that said, LOL @ trading Fields for Crawford. That to me is an obvious no-no. Douglas on the other hand is doable.
