Re: Jays acquire Ben Francisco
isn't it possible that this move really is just insurance if Davis isn't healthy to go for the season...if he is healthy then maybe we eat 1/6 of his salary and cut him at the end of spring training. Although there is still 2 months of offseason to go so anything can happen I suppose.

If people are thinking Snider would be the main piece here, you're wrong.

He'd be very close to a league average pitcher if he were in Toronto considering the increase competition. Dave Cameron of fangraphs said he was a #4 starter a few weeks ago.
There’s also a question of how Gonzalez will pitch outside of Oakland’s ballpark, but those worries are overblown. While Gio’s ERA is nearly a run higher on the road, both his FIP (3.97 to 4.15) and xFIP (3.90 to 4.05) are actually better away from the Coliseum. Nearly all of Gonzalez’s peripherals remain the same no matter where he pitches, so a change of scenery shouldn’t affect him as much as people may think.
FIP is a neat stat (I use it often), but you have to consider context. He was absolute **** on the road. His peripherals were absolute **** on the road. Please don't use italics like that ever again when you're spouting absolute ****.

That is a direct quote from FanGraphs...maybe you can go over there and tell them your opinion? And possibly drop off a resume as well?

I'm not a fan of Gio Gonzalez, but damn that was a KO.

Agreed. I respect both posters in question but seriously, that was a best described as a "knock-out"

What did he do that was so great? He quotes something and does not credit where it came from.

@SEA: 8 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 11 K - 14th ranked offence in AL, pitcher-friendly, started 4 AAA hitters
@LAA: 7.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K - 10th in AL but close to 13th, pitcher-friendly, full team
@CLE: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K - 9th in AL, pitcher-friendly, started 6 AAA guys (seriously)
@NYM: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K - 6th in NL, pitcher-friendly, full team
@BAL: 7 IP, 9 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K - 7th in AL, hitter-friendly, full team
@SFO: 6.2 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 8 K - 16th in NL, pitcher-friendly, full team
@KAN: 7 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 6 K - 6th in AL, neutral, full team
@MIN: 6 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 K - 13th rank in AL, pitcher-friendly, full team
Those are his good road games. Pitcher-friendly parks, against poor hitting teams. His bad road games came against BOS, TOR, NYY, SEA (lol), TEX, CHW, LAA. He also had a rain out in TEX of 2.2 IP, 7 ER, 5 BB, 1 K. There is no way you could tell me he's a good road pitcher. There's zero evidence.

But what about his peripherals? I'm interested in this debate because I really don't have my mind made up as to whats right.

The best offensive teams he played on the road:
@NYY: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
@BOS: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
@TOR: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K
@TEX (2 starts; including a rain out because why not?): 6.2 IP, 13 H, 10 ER (14 total), 8 BB, 6 K
@NYY: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 6 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
@BOS: 5.2 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 3 BB, 5 K
@TOR: 5 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 5 BB, 4 K
@TEX (2 starts; including a rain out because why not?): 6.2 IP, 13 H, 10 ER (14 total), 8 BB, 6 K

Re: Jays acquire Ben Francisco
I like Gio, yeah his peripherals aren't great but his stuff is, at 26 i'm not sure he's a finished product.
Besides, there's no way we're getting him, there are probably a dozen teams putting in bids, there's no value to be had here.

I see little reason to believe that Gio wouldn't get hit hard by regular AL East competition (while also seeing his already high BB rate climb). If it costs significant prospects...don't do it.

Re: Jays acquire Ben Francisco
Why does it have to be prospects?
I'm hoping that Lind is soon obsolete. Package him with Snider. And beyond that I'm hoping that Gio is coming in as a #4 starter behind Ricky, Brandon and Yu. One can dream.

I tend to agree. No point overpaying for a starter only to have them wrecked in the AL East. I hate walks and he tends to give a lot of them.

Because people want prospects and not Adam Lind.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.
