Blue Jays agree to sign Jeff Mathis to one-year $1.5MM guaranteed deal, I have learned. Had been arb eligible.

Another good value signing. IMO he'd win us more games than JPA (unless JP improves a lot).

He's gonna have a career year backing up JPA next year. New ballpark, working with Dwayne Murphy, it's almost inevitable. Good signing.

Nope. Playing Mathis over JPA gets us an extra like 30 runs based on framing pitches alone. Add in passed balls, game calling and wild pitches and it starts to get close. Their OBP's are similar (both terrible).

Not too much to worry about here, he's a one year place holder for D'Arnaud... maybe not even that if D'Arnaud is up in August like Lawrie this year. Then trade him to a team with catcher injury problems... which always happens.
He just shouldn't swing....ever! Just go up there looking for walks.

Agreed. He might hurt himself.

The thread title conjures up an image of Farrell with his head in his hands, accepting the inevitable; Jeff Mathis is going to be on the 25 man roster all season.

As long as JPA doesn't get hurt, this should be fine. I don't want to imagine a world where Jeff Mathis starts regularly, nobody needs this team to become the Angels.

I wouldn't mind trading owners with the Angels. This just about sums us up.

#BlueJays, leading the league in press releases, avoid arb with Jeff Mathis. Deal is $1.5 million.

The cool thing about sports is nobody forces you to be a fan of their team. You are more than welcome to become an angels fan.

The only difference between the two is JPA hits a jack every 21 PA compared to 94 PA for Mathis.
Mathis makes up a lot of ground defensively on JPA and is coming to a hitters ballpark. I bet Mathis post a OBP north of .260 this year.

They should use the games Jeff Mathis plays in to prep the pitchers for national league games. I don't see anyone doing much worse than his horrendous .480 ops.
