Mayo vs Crawford
The latest I've read is that the Memphis trade is on hold because the Pacers are waiting to see what Crawford is going to do. Think that says Bird likes Crawford better. I think I agree but can see how someone would prefer Mayo. Anyway, here's what I like about Crawford:
1. Has the rep of being a good guy and solid locker room presence. Mayo's past raises questions in this area.
2. Assuming the offer on the table for Crawford is similar to the West deal (2 years a little less money). Means you won't have to deal with a contract for this spot right away next year. Also means Crawford can concentrate on fitting in rather than convincing the rest of the league he's worth big money.
Thread will probably be obsolete before morning. In any event what does everyone think?

Mayo. I like Crawford, but Mayo is younger, cheaper, better defender, can still hit his potential, and if he doesn't workout he could either be brought back on a cheap deal or be renounced and expire.

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
yes rumours suggest the Mayo deal is on hold pending a resolution re: Crawford.
Also rumours say the Pacers are only willing to offer Crawford a 1 year deal so in effect both Crawford and Mayo are 1 year deals.
A plus side for Mayo is that he is a lot younger and still has potential.
Crawford is a better locker room presence apparantly but is a volume shooter
I tend to lean more towards Mayo becuase of the age factor but it is a very close call for me.

Nah its because Crawford will be a ton cheaper. I have read only 3-4 million dollars for Crawford annually. OJ will be paid after this season, that is something Bird may or may not want to do depending on his production if he goes to the Pacers.
OJ Mayo , Michael Jordan , Allen Iverson.

The pacers will have enough cap space to re-sign him if he plays hard and plays well this season. If he doesn't he simply expires and is let go. Not much risk for the pacers here i think (apart from the fact will Mayo want to re-sign with the pacers after the season)

I think the 2012 FA class is worth going with Crawford over Mayo. Crawford produces more of what we want from that role, but if OJ gets that potential, it'll be close.

Which is not a problem at all since he is an RFA. And the small chance he wouldn't want to stay just opens up the opportunity for a player who would.

Hadn't heard the offer to Crawford was for only one year. I'm a little surprised Bird would set himself for an off season in which he would be negotiating with Hibbert, Hill and either Mayo or Crawford. That, in the face of probably more than ten teams with max cap space.

Well, Hibbert and Hill will be restricted, and Bird would be hoping to maintain maximum cap space as well for that offseason. As of right now, if Foster only signed a one year deal, you're looking at somewhere in the neighborhood of $18-19 million in cap space when you factor in the new signings (West and Pendergraph). Mayo wouldn't really change that, nor would Crawford on a one year deal. I would think that Bird would be ok with letting Crawford walk after one year if we got him, and focus his attentions on Roy and Hill. He could make a near max offer to someone like Eric Gordon, and then look to re-sign HIbbert and Hill at that point. If Collison and Hansbrough progress, respectively, you then look to re-sign them. If one or both don't, you can let them go the following off-season and bring in a PG on the MLE or through trade (possibly using Granger at that point), and look to build around a solid new core. Otherwise, you look to extend those two, and you're still probably shy of the luxury tax and have a full core of:
Collison/Hill/Lance
George or new young SG
Granger/George
Hansbrough
Hibbert

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
Obviously Mayo, unless they insist on giving them our next pick.
If it is a 1 year deal, Crawford would be very nice as well.

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
Though i'd love to have Mayo for the long term, i think Crawford will fit better.
Crawford knows his role, he's not a starter but he excels in what he does - coming off the bench and producing when needed.
Mayo is younger, and has a bigger upside, but he doesn't have the late-game experience we need, he's got little playoff experience, and comes with a little baggage.
I like Mayo more than Crawford x2 individually, but in terms of playing on a team and "filling a role", Crawford would be my easy pick.

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
For flexibility reasons you have to go with Mayo. Crawford would be great here imo, but I'd like to see us be able to freely make trades to improve this franchise over the next 2-3 seasons. Taking Crawford on a 3-4 year deal would reduce our ability to pick up young guys/picks for our capspace.
I expect some pretty helpful deadline deals this season.

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
Yes Mayo has a higher upside and is younger and goes better on a fish sandwich.
That said I'll go with Crawford if I can get him on 2 yr $4-5 million per yr deal. Mayo seems like one of those guys that may never reach his potential.

Re: Mayo vs Crawford
This:
Also may well save us a draft pick and (as a one year deal) frees up the position nicely just in case some hometown free agent star 2 guard decides sign here next season.
