James Posey Amnesty

Why did we do it? It's not like it's necessary for us, and will leave us with quite a bit of salary to take on to get to the minimum (I think it's in the $9m range? :dontknow:

). Granted if we pick up OJ Mayo then we'll absorb a little bit of it.

Think we're happy to pay the difference to the league for nothing or does anyone suspect there's a pretty significant deal in the works?

The amnesty deadline isn't until Friday so I don't understand why they did it now rather than just waiting. I would assume that the amnesty could happen right before any deal that got made.

Well it makes sense. He's not going to be playing at all, since he's basically worthless on the court. So why keep him? Why not have cap space available for further deals that come up, or amnesty guys, or free agents who fall through the gaps and end up taking a cheaper deal with us?

I think it's a clear indication that we aren't done with this offseason yet, not by a long shot.

His agent thanked the Pacers for doing it yesterday. Obviously, Posey's camp believes someone will call.

It gives the Pacers an extra roster spot. Other than that, i don't really get why Posey got amnestied.

Can't amnesty him during the season, and pure cap space is more usable in trades than an expiring contract on a not as useful player like Posey.

We'll hit the minimum salary threshold, though, since they lowered it to only 80% of the cap for this year, I think we may have already just barely hit it.

Oh it's only 80%? I had thought it was 85% for some reason. I suppose Foster's and Pendergraph's unknown salaries might take us up to that point.

Hadn't known that it wasn't possible to amnesty someone during the season though, now it makes sense.

If it was just to fell the minimum cap space, I wouldn't mind having JO back for big man depth if the price was right.

The 80% was a late agreement just as final negotiations took place. Essentially, it happened after an agreement was announced and season planned, but before the CBA had been agreed upon formally, and was part of the "minor" details to wrap up. This is the only year the number will be 80%. Something like 85% next year, and 90% after that going forward.

The owner is using the money saved this year as the way to pay David West. I thought it was a rash move.

Ultimately, I don't think there's any downside to amnesty'ing Posey. He's not going to really help us on the court, and his main asset (leadership and work ethic) are now being embraced by vets like Foster and David West, and young guys like Hibbert (work ethic) and Hansbrough, among many others.

Poseys salary still counts for reaching the salary floor, it just no longer counts when determining how we sit against the cap and tax lines.

^ That's how I thought it worked. Also, what happens if you are below the minimum, do they just pay the difference to the players, or is it more punitive?
