Leafs and Blue Jays team up for charity

The Leafs and Jays have been mixing and mingling perhaps more than ever in the history of the two franchises, and with an increasing public profile through updates and messages posted on the social media website Twitter. There, fans of the teams have learned pitcher Ricky Romero has subscribed to the NHL’s Centre Ice television package, and that he has watched more than a couple of hockey games from his off-season home in California.

Players from the two teams have gone out for dinner together, and have posted about who got stuck with the bill. Armstrong said he has received post-game texts from his baseball-playing friends, including Arencibia, who is scheduled to fly to Toronto on Tuesday in time to watch the Leafs host the Carolina Hurricanes.

“We’re all fans of each other,” Arencibia said. “I’ve got the NHL Centre Ice package now because I sit there and I watch the games. If I can’t watch it live, I’m following it on my phone. I’ve just become a fan of the guys, and of them as people.”

The group has been calling itself TeamUnit, and with the 25-year-old catcher doing the legwork, it will launch a charitable venture Wednesday. The group — which includes Arencibia and teammate Brett Lawrie, as well as Armstrong and teammate Tyler Bozak — will lend its name to a line of T-Shirts, available at http://www.teamunitstore.com, with proceeds of the sales going to the charities of their choice.

The shirts are available with a choice of the four players’ names and numbers on the back, and with the TeamUnit name across the chest, over a hockey stick crossed with a baseball bat.

"TeamUnit" is an unfortunate name.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.
