Ridnour for Hinrich allows Minnesota to have 3 point guards for the shortened season without a lot of commitment.

Barea lead the NBA in unassisted layups. His offense will look just fine, it's his defense that I'm worried about.Vindicater wrote:Barea is overrated.
He will not look so good when all five people on the other team have to play defence with an eye to dirk at all times.

It may sound harsh, but I think the Wolves might be wondering if Ridnour's head is in the game with the terrible hardship he's going through with his baby boy, Luke being unable to work out all summer and the emotional strain that comes with something like that. Maybe they felt they needed an experienced PG just in case.

He might be overrated but what you've gotta say is he's pretty good at penetrating and going to the basket. Last season we had not a single player on our roster who was able to do that regularly. It's been a major problem in recent years.
This season we have both Rubio and Barea who will be able to do that. Even if they're not as good 3pt shooters as Rid is their ability to penetrate will create a lot of open looks for teammates.
I like the signing even if we overpaid a little.

One thing, this is a shortened season, so we're gonna need depth

It is so far from a horrible risk. Based on Barea's tweets, he is excited to be wanted. He said he will "help lead the team to the playoffs this year"... we will see about that JJ.
I remember watching a highlight reel from last season and people here were all commenting on how many dunks/alley-oops we had. I think that with Barea getting into the lane, that is going to free up all our young athletic forwards near the lane. I have a feeling we are going to see a lot of pick and rolls with kicks to cutters whose defender had to step in to stop Barea/Rubio.
I really am curious if we are going to keep Luke or not. I think we really should for now. I think that Ricky, Barea and Luke can coexist. Luke does hit open 3s. And his value will only increase as the trade deadline nears and championship contenders need PGs.

exactly and if we space the floor with a line up of say jj/wes/beas/dw/love thats a hell of a lot of shooting that guys have to stay home on...he's gonna really be able to open things up for us and cause some chaos with drive and kicks and dump offs.

It's a contract on a player that will be easily tradeable if we ever want to move him. No risk imo. It's no different than the Sessions or Ridnour deal, albeit $750K more per year.

That looks cool. Could get a little awkward if Kahn decides not to sign him.

Re: We are finalizing a deal for JJ Barea?
Kahn couldn't say that we had signed him because, at the time, we didn't have an available roster spot to do so. After the Hayward trade, we do.

I don't think we're limited to 15 roster spots until the season begins, but until he had officially signed, maybe he wasn't allowed to discuss a player that was technically still on another team, because that would be tampering?
