UFC on Fox. So much buzz around that, and created so many other stories.

UFC buying Strikeforce is close; can't believe that was this year. Seems like ages ago.

Diaz press conference-gate has to be on here. 3rd biggest, IMO.

the best option is this is one of the greatest years in mma history in terms of there being great fights all around. there has been really bad luck with injuries but only a few disappointing cards.

fox may prove to be the biggest story in ufc history though.

In terms of what got the most attention at the time, I think the UFC buying Strikeforce out-did the UFC's move to network TV. It certainly was the more shocking event.

But in time I think the biggest event from this year will prove to have been Viacom buying Bellator. Bellator now has stable financial backing to go along with their shrewd talent building philosophy. I think everyone knew the UFC would go to network TV eventually and Bellator has a better shot to oppose the UFC in the long-run than Strikeforce did because of their financial backing while them not spending money foolishly.

While UFC on Fox will probably turn out to be their best move in the long run, it may be years before they see the fruits of their labor. The acquisition of Strikeforce has given us great dream match-ups in the first year alone. Diaz/Penn, Lesnar/Overeem in a couple weeks and perhaps the greatest fight of all time in Shogun/Hendo. In terms of 2011, the purchase of Strikeforce is the best story.

Went with Strikeforce because we really haven't seen the benefits of the Fox payoff.

Cammo you've done a good job with the nominations for the other threads but this one is off. As mentioned prior, the Nick Diaz situation and Viacom buying Bellator should be on here

^ I'd put those 2 ahead of the Lesnar story and the PPV numbers.

Ask and ye shall receive...kinda. I changed the PPV numbers to the Diaz situation. I still maintain that Lesnar's diverticulitis was a bigger deal than Viacom buying Bellator though.

I don't know, the injury ones don't do anything for me.

I would measure how big/good a story is by how much time I spend trying to find new information about it.

Even when a star as big as Lesnar or GSP go out, you see the story, and are kind of just like "okay." Nobody is spending the next hour refreshing all of the main MMA sites to get more information like you might do when a real story breaks, like UFC buying Strikeforce, the UFC on Fox deal, or even the Diaz thing.

Nor to we keep discussing an injury story for the next week or so. Usually about a day of talking about the new matchups it might open up, and that's it. Nothing changes. GSP's ACL? Still torn. Got it. With a real story, you have questions that may get answered days later, and those answers beget more questions. People STILL don't know all of the details about the UFC buying Strikeforce.

Hell, even this recent Overeem licensing fiasco was more interesting and had more legs than the injury stories.

That viewpoint works for GSP but not Lesner. He is still dealing with the consequences of that illness and may never be the same.

Lesnar's is ongoing, but still...it's not really captivating. Maybe the first time around, but not the second.

I think Chael Sonnen endangering his life in South America from insane trolling has to be up there.

There were reports that they are doing some serious look-look into whether Sonnen would even be safe.

Fighting aside, he not only took a sh*t on an entire nation, he did it to the home of Vale Tudo.

GSP's knee may well be the biggest of 2012.
