Jays are interested in signing Darren Oliver

Four American League contenders — the Rangers, Angels, Red Sox, and Blue Jays — have shown interest in free-agent left-hander Darren Oliver, a major-league source told FOXSports.com.

Oliver, 41, is coming off a season in which he posted a career-low 2.29 ERA in 61 relief appearances for the Texas Rangers.

Oliver pitched for the Red Sox (2002) and Angels (2007-2009) earlier in his career.

Oliver has reached the postseason in each of the last six years but is still looking for his first World Series ring. So, he is almost certain to sign with a team that has a realistic chance of winning it all in 2012. He lives with his family in the Dallas area, so a return to the Rangers would be easiest from a personal standpoint.

never hurts to have a vet lefty that can get outs when you need 'em.

There's no way Rogers can afford a LOOGY.

Do you know that Oliver averages over an inning per appearance? That by definition makes him just a LHR instead of a LOOGY. Maybe you just like using that title and don't know what it means?

Also Oliver will cost under $3 million so he's pretty reasonably priced.

However Oliver is getting up in ages and at 41 years old, I'd rather go with other left handed options like George Sherril. If we had 2 LHR on the roster already than Oliver would be ideal.

Oliver pitched 51 innings over 61 games. Did you know that's less than an inning per appearance? But you're right that he isn't a LOOGY. Sherrill was the extreme LOOGY I was thinking of. Looked them both up earlier today when this was posted in another thread.

Jeez, Woodie Fryman was a lefty, let's just get him. Oh wait ...
